Probably the reading has arisen because the redactor(s) felt the need to make clear that the word is a future form. The Pāḷi commentary also explains bhijjati as a future (paraphrasing with bhijjissati).14 pūtisaṁdeho    maraṇāttaṁ hi jīvitaṁ ||
