Mahāparinibbānasuttaṁ (DN 16)

Atha kho Bhagavā acirapakkante Vassakāre brāhmaṇe Magadhamahāmatte, āyasmantaṁ Ānandaṁ āmantesi: [38]

“Gaccha tvaṁ Ānanda yāvatikā bhikkhū As is usual in the Sinhalese editions there is a mass of variations in the readings involving the vowel u/ū in conjunction with certain consonants, like bhikkhu/bhikkhū. I have not recorded these as they do not seem to indicate what the editors intended.02 Rājagahaṁ upanissāya viharanti, te sabbe Upaṭṭhānasālāyaṁ sannipātehī.” ti [39]

“Evaṁ Bhante,” ti kho āyasmā Ānando Bhagavato paṭissutvā, yāvatikā bhikkhū Rājagahaṁ upanissāya viharanti, te sabbe upaṭṭhānasālāyaṁ sannipātetvā yena Bhagavā tenupasaṅkami, upasaṅkamitvā Bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā, ekam-antaṁ aṭṭhāsi. Ekam-antaṁ ṭhito kho āyasmā Ānando Bhagavantaṁ etad-avoca: [40]

“Sannipatito BJT: Santipātito, printing error. -nn- and -nt- look very similar in Sinhala letters.03 Bhante Bhikkhusaṅgho, yassa dāni Bhante Bhagavā kālaṁ maññasī.” ti [41]

Atha kho Bhagavā uṭṭhāyāsanā yena upaṭṭhānasālā tenupasaṅkami, upasaṅkamitvā paññatte āsane nisīdi. Nisajja kho Bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi: [42]

“Satta vo bhikkhave aparihāniye dhamme desessāmi, taṁ suṇātha sādhukaṁ manasikarotha bhāsissāmī.” ti [43]

“Evaṁ Bhante,” ti kho te bhikkhū Bhagavato paccassosuṁ, Bhagavā etad-avoca: [44]

  1. “Yāvakīvañ-ca bhikkhave bhikkhū abhiṇhasannipātā sannipātabahulā bhavissanti, vuḍḍhi yeva bhikkhave PTS omits bhikkhave here but has it elsewhere in this position.4 bhikkhūnaṁ pāṭikaṅkhā no parihāni. [45]

  2. Yāvakīvañ-ca bhikkhave bhikkhū samaggā sannipatissanti samaggā vuṭṭhahissanti, samaggā Saṅghakaraṇīyāni karissanti, vuḍḍhi yeva bhikkhave bhikkhūnaṁ pāṭikaṅkhā no parihāni. [46]

  3. Yāvakīvañ-ca bhikkhave bhikkhū apaññattaṁ na paññāpessanti paññattaṁ na samucchindissanti, yathāpaññattesu sikkhāpadesu samādāya vattissanti, vuḍḍhi yeva bhikkhave bhikkhūnaṁ pāṭikaṅkhā no parihāni. [47]

  4. Yāvakīvañ-ca bhikkhave bhikkhū ye te bhikkhū therā, rattaññū cirapabbajitā Saṅghapitaro Saṅghaparināyakā te sakkarissanti garukarissanti mānessanti pūjessanti tesañ-ca sotabbaṁ maññissanti, vuḍḍhi yeva bhikkhave BJT: bhikkha, printing error.5 bhikkhūnaṁ pāṭikaṅkhā no parihāni. [48]

  5. Yāvakīvañ-ca bhikkhave bhikkhū uppannāya taṇhāya ponobhavikāya BJT, Thai, ChS: ponobbhavikāya, but there is no reason for gemination here.6 na vasaṁ gacchissanti, BJT, PTS: gacchanti, but a hypothetical future tense is required as with the other conditions listed.7 vuḍḍhi yeva bhikkhave bhikkhūnaṁ pāṭikaṅkhā no parihāni.   6. Yāvakīvañ-ca bhikkhave bhikkhū āraññakesu senāsanesu sāpekkhā bhavissanti, vuḍḍhi yeva bhikkhave bhikkhūnaṁ pāṭikaṅkhā no parihāni. [50]

  7. Yāvakīvañ-ca bhikkhave bhikkhū paccattañ-ñeva satiṁ upaṭṭhapessanti, PTS: upaṭṭhāpessanti; PED favours the short vowel.8 kin-ti anāgatā ca pesalā sabrahmacārī āgaccheyyuṁ, āgatā ca pesalā sabrahmacārī phāsuṁ vihareyyuṁ, All editions read ti.9 vuḍḍhi yeva bhikkhave bhikkhūnaṁ pāṭikaṅkhā no parihāni. Yāvakīvañ-ca bhikkhave ime satta aparihāniyā dhammā bhikkhūsu ṭhassanti, imesu ca sattasu aparihāniyesu dhammesu bhikkhū sandississanti, BJT, PTS: sandissanti, here and in similar positions below, but it seems a future form is needed as in ChS and Thai.10 vuḍḍhi yeva bhikkhave bhikkhūnaṁ pāṭikaṅkhā no parihāni.
