Mahāparinibbānasuttaṁ (DN 16)

Apare pi vo bhikkhave BJT: Apare bhikkhave; ChS: Cha, vo bhikkhave; PTS Cha bhikkhave.02 cha aparihāniye dhamme desessāmi, taṁ suṇātha sādhukaṁ manasikarotha bhāsissāmī ti.” [93]

“Evaṁ Bhante,” ti kho te bhikkhū Bhagavato paccassosuṁ, Bhagavā etad-avoca: [94]

  1. “Yāvakīvañ-ca bhikkhave bhikkhū mettaṁ kāyakammaṁ paccupaṭṭhāpessanti Thai: paccupaṭṭhapessanti, here and below.03 sabrahmacārīsu, āvi PTS: āvī, throughout, but PED favours āvi for this indeclineable.04 ceva raho ca, vuḍḍhi yeva bhikkhave bhikkhūnaṁ pāṭikaṅkhā no parihāni. [95]

  2. Yāvakīvañ-ca bhikkhave bhikkhū mettaṁ vacīkammaṁ paccupaṭṭhāpessanti sabrahmacārīsu, āvi ceva raho ca, vuḍḍhi yeva bhikkhave bhikkhūnaṁ pāṭikaṅkhā no parihāni. [96]

  3. Yāvakīvañ-ca bhikkhave bhikkhū mettaṁ manokammaṁ paccupaṭṭhāpessanti sabrahmacārīsu, āvi ceva raho ca, vuḍḍhi yeva bhikkhave bhikkhūnaṁ pāṭikaṅkhā no parihāni. [97]

  4. Yāvakīvañ-ca bhikkhave bhikkhū ye te lābhā dhammikā Dhammaladdhā - antamaso pattapariyāpannamattam-pi - tathārūpehi lābhehi appaṭivibhattabhogī Thai: na appaṭivibhattabhogī, which reverses the meaning.05 bhavissanti sīlavantehi sabrahmacārīhi sādhāraṇabhogī, vuḍḍhi yeva bhikkhave bhikkhūnaṁ pāṭikaṅkhā no parihāni.   5. Yāvakīvañ-ca bhikkhave bhikkhū yāni tāni sīlāni akhaṇḍāni acchiddāni BJT: āchiddāni, alternative formation, showing the long vowel + single consonant vs. short vowel + double consonant variation.06 asabalāni akammāsāni bhujissāni, viññūpasatthāni aparāmaṭṭhāni samādhisaṁvattanikāni, tathārūpesu sīlesu sīlasāmaññagatā viharissanti sabrahmacārīhi, āvi ceva raho ca, vuḍḍhi yeva bhikkhave bhikkhūnaṁ pāṭikaṅkhā no parihāni.   6. Yāvakīvañ-ca bhikkhave bhikkhū yāyaṁ diṭṭhi Ariyā niyyānikā, niyyāti takkarassa Takkarassa = taṁ (Comm. = that) karassa.07 sammādukkhakkhayāya, tathārūpāya diṭṭhiyā diṭṭhisāmaññagatā viharissanti sabrahmacārīhi, āvi ceva raho ca, vuḍḍhi yeva bhikkhave bhikkhūnaṁ pāṭikaṅkhā no parihāni. [100]

Yāvakīvañ-ca bhikkhave ime cha aparihāniyā dhammā bhikkhūsu ṭhassanti, imesu ca chasu aparihāniyesu dhammesu bhikkhū sandississanti, vuḍḍhi yeva bhikkhave bhikkhūnaṁ pāṭikaṅkhā no parihānī.” ti [101]

Tatra pi sudaṁ BJT, ChS, PTS: Tatra sudaṁ, here, but includes it later. Normally in Pāḷi pi is included in the first item also.08 Bhagavā Rājagahe viharanto Gijjhakūṭe pabbate, etad-eva bahulaṁ bhikkhūnaṁ Dhammiṁ kathaṁ karoti: [102]

“Iti sīlaṁ, iti samādhi, iti paññā, sīlaparibhāvito samādhi mahapphalo hoti mahānisaṁso, samādhiparibhāvitā paññā mahapphalā hoti mahānisaṁsā, paññāparibhāvitaṁ cittaṁ sammad-eva āsavehi vimuccati, seyyathīdaṁ: BJT sometimes writes seyyathīdaṁ and sometimes seyyathidaṁ. Which spelling was intended by the editors is not clear. Other editions have long -ī-.09 kāmāsavā bhavāsavā PTS inserts diṭṭhāsavā here and in similar places throughout. The original formula seems to have been three-fold, and including a fourth term seems to be a later addition (though already found in the discourses).10 avijjāsavā.” ti [103]
