Atha kho Bhagavā Nāḷandāyaṁ yathābhirantaṁviharitvā, āyasmantaṁ Ānandaṁ āmantesi: [130]

“Āyām' Ānanda yena Pāṭaligāmo tenupasaṅkamissāmā.” ti [131]

“Evaṁ Bhante,” ti kho āyasmā Ānando Bhagavato paccassosi. Atha kho Bhagavā mahatā bhikkhusaṅghena saddhiṁ yena Pāṭaligāmo tad-avasari. Assosuṁ kho Pāṭaligāmiyā ChS: Pāṭaligāmikā, and similarly throughout.02 upāsakā: [132]

“Bhagavā kira Pāṭaligāmaṁ anuppatto.” ti [133]

Atha kho Pāṭaligāmiyā upāsakā yena Bhagavā tenupasaṅkamiṁsu, upasaṅkamitvā Bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā, ekam-antaṁ nisīdiṁsu. Ekam-antaṁ nisinnā kho Pāṭaligāmiyā upāsakā Bhagavantaṁ etad-avocuṁ: [134]

“Adhivāsetu no Bhante Bhagavā āvasathāgāran.”-ti [135]

Adhivāsesi Bhagavā tuṇhībhāvena. Atha kho Pāṭaligāmiyā upāsakā Bhagavato adhivāsanaṁ viditvā, uṭṭhāyāsanā, Bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā padakkhiṇaṁ katvā, yena āvasathāgāraṁ tenupasaṅkamiṁsu, upasaṅkamitvā, sabbasanthariṁ Thai: sabbasantharitaṁ santhataṁ.03 āvasathāgāraṁ santharitvā, āsanāni paññāpetvā, udakamaṇikaṁ PTS: udakamaṇiṁ. Maṇi is not given with the required meaning in PED.04 patiṭṭhāpetvā, telappadīpaṁ ChS: telapadīpaṁ, and similarly throughout. I have accepted gemination here.05 āropetvā, yena Bhagavā tenupasaṅkamiṁsu, upasaṅkamitvā Bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā, ekam-antaṁ aṭṭhaṁsu. Ekam-antaṁ ṭhitā kho Pāṭaligāmiyā upāsakā Bhagavantaṁ etad-avocuṁ: [136]

“Sabbasantharisanthataṁ Thai, PTS: Sabbasantharitaṁ santhataṁ.06 Bhante āvasathāgāraṁ, āsanāni paññattāni, udakamaṇiko patiṭṭhāpito, telappadīpo āropito, yassa dāni Bhante Bhagavā kālaṁ maññatī.” ti [137]

Atha kho Bhagavā sāyanhasamayaṁ Thai: pubbaṇhasamayaṁ, which would be the wrong time for the context; PTS omits.07 nivāsetvā, pattacīvaram-ādāya, saddhiṁ Bhikkhusaṅghena, yena āvasathāgāraṁ tenupasaṅkami, upasaṅkamitvā, pāde pakkhāletvā, āvasathāgāraṁ pavisitvā, majjhimaṁ thambhaṁ nissāya puratthābhimukho nisīdi, Bhikkhusaṅgho pi kho pāde pakkhāletvā, āvasathāgāraṁ pavisitvā, pacchimaṁ bhittiṁ Thai: pacchimabhittiṁ, compound form of the text reading.08 nissāya puratthābhimukho nisīdi, Bhagavantaṁ yeva ChS: Bhagavantam-eva; Thai: Bhagavantañ-ñeva, here and below. The sandhi is being applied differently in these three cases.09 purakkhatvā. Pāṭaligāmiyā pi kho upāsakā, pāde pakkhāletvā, āvasathāgāraṁ pavisitvā, puratthimaṁ bhittiṁ Thai: puratthimabhittiṁ, compound form of the text reading.10 nissāya pacchimābhimukhā nisīdiṁsu, Bhagavantaṁ yeva purakkhatvā. Atha kho Bhagavā Pāṭaligāmiye upāsake āmantesi: [138]

“Pañcime gahapatayo ādīnavā dussīlassa sīlavipattiyā. [139]

Katame pañca? [140]

  1. Idha gahapatayo dussīlo sīlavipanno, pamādādhikaraṇaṁ mahatiṁ bhogajāniṁ nigacchati. Ayaṁ paṭhamo ādīnavo dussīlassa sīlavipattiyā. BJT: sīlaṁ vipattiyā, parsed form here sīlavipattiyā eslewhere.11 [141]

  2. Puna caparaṁ gahapatayo dussīlassa sīlavipannassa, pāpako kittisaddo abbhuggacchati. Ayaṁ dutiyo ādīnavo dussīlassa sīlavipattiyā. [142]

  3. Puna caparaṁ gahapatayo dussīlo sīlavipanno, yaññad-eva parisaṁ upasaṅkamati, yadi Khattiyaparisaṁ yadi brāhmaṇaparisaṁ, yadi gahapatiparisaṁ yadi samaṇaparisaṁ, avisārado upasaṅkamati maṅkubhūto. Ayaṁ tatiyo ādīnavo dussīlassa sīlavipattiyā. [143]

  4. Puna caparaṁ gahapatayo dussīlo sīlavipanno, sammūḷho kālaṁ karoti. Ayaṁ catuttho ādīnavo dussīlassa sīlavipattiyā. [144]

  5. Puna caparaṁ gahapatayo dussīlo sīlavipanno, kāyassa bhedā, param-maraṇā, apāyaṁ duggatiṁ vinipātaṁ nirayaṁ upapajjati. PTS: uppajjati, these forms are regularly confused, it seems either is correct.12 Ayaṁ pañcamo ādīnavo dussīlassa sīlavipattiyā. Ime kho gahapatayo pañca ādīnavā dussīlassa sīlavipattiyā. Pañcime gahapatayo ānisaṁsā sīlavato sīlasampadāya. [145]

Katame pañca? [146]

  1. Idha gahapatayo sīlavā sīlasampanno, appamādādhikaraṇaṁ mahantaṁ bhogakkhandhaṁ adhigacchati. Ayaṁ paṭhamo ānisaṁso sīlavato sīlasampadāya. [147]

  2. Puna caparaṁ gahapatayo sīlavato sīlasampannassa, kalyāṇo kittisaddo abbhuggacchati. Ayaṁ dutiyo ānisaṁso sīlavato sīlasampadāya. [148]

  3. Puna caparaṁ gahapatayo sīlavā sīlasampanno, yaññad-eva parisaṁ upasaṅkamati, yadi Khattiyaparisaṁ yadi brāhmaṇaparisaṁ, yadi gahapatiparisaṁ yadi samaṇaparisaṁ, visārado upasaṅkamati amaṅkubhūto. Ayaṁ tatiyo ānisaṁso sīlavato sīlasampadāya. [149]

  4. Puna caparaṁ gahapatayo sīlavā sīlasampanno, asammūḷho kālaṁ karoti. Ayaṁ catuttho ānisaṁso sīlavato sīlasampadāya. [150]

  5. Puna caparaṁ gahapatayo sīlavā sīlasampanno, kāyassa bhedā param-maraṇā sugatiṁ Saggaṁ lokaṁ upapajjati. Ayaṁ pañcamo ānisaṁso sīlavato sīlasampadāya. Ime kho gahapatayo pañca ānisaṁsā sīlavato sīlasampadāyā.” ti [151]

Atha kho Bhagavā, Pāṭaligāmiye upāsake, bahud-eva rattiṁ Dhammiyā kathāya sandassetvā samādapetvā samuttejetvā sampahaṁsetvā, uyyojesi: [152]

“Abhikkantā kho gahapatayo ratti, yassa dāni tumhe kālaṁ maññathā.” ti [153]

“Evaṁ Bhante,” ti kho Pāṭaligāmiyā upāsakā Bhagavato paṭissutvā, uṭṭhāyāsanā Bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā padakkhiṇaṁ katvā, pakkamiṁsu. [154]

Atha kho Bhagavā, acirapakkantesu Pāṭaligāmiyesu upāsakesu, suññāgāraṁ pāvisi. [155]
