Tena kho pana samayena ChS: Tena samayena.03 sambahulā Devatāyo, sahassasahasseva, ChS, Thai: sahasseva; PTS: sahassass' eva, here and below - I don't understand this form.04 Pāṭaligāme vatthūni parigaṇhanti. Yasmiṁ padese mahesakkhā Devatā vatthūni parigaṇhanti, mahesakkhānaṁ tattha raññaṁ rājamahāmattānaṁ cittāni namanti nivesanāni māpetuṁ. [157]

Addasā kho Bhagavā Dibbena cakkhunā, visuddhena atikkantamānusakena, tā Devatāyo BJT: Devatāye, printing error.08 sahassasahasseva Pāṭaligāme vatthūni parigaṇhantiyo. Atha kho Bhagavā rattiyā paccūsasamaye Thai, PTS: paccusa-, PED favours long -ū-.09 paccuṭṭhāya, āyasmantaṁ Ānandaṁ āmantesi: [160]

“Ko nu kho ChS: ke nu kho, perhaps printing error.10 Ānanda Pāṭaligāme nagaraṁ māpetī?” ti BJT: māpentī ti, which lacks concinnity.11 [161]

“Sunīdha-Vassakārā Bhante Magadhamahāmattā Pāṭaligāme nagaraṁ māpenti Vajjīnaṁ paṭibāhāyā.” ti [162]

“Seyyathā pi Ānanda Devehi Tāvatiṁsehi saddhiṁ ChS adds Sakko.12 mantetvā, evam-eva kho Ānanda Sunīdha-Vassakārā Magadhamahāmattā Pāṭaligāme nagaraṁ māpenti Vajjīnaṁ paṭibāhāya. Idhāhaṁ Ānanda addasaṁ Dibbena cakkhunā, visuddhena atikkantamānusakena, sambahulā Devatāyo sahassasahasseva Pāṭaligāme vatthūni parigaṇhantiyo. [163]

Yasmiṁ BJT, ChS add Ānanda.13 padese mahesakkhā Devatā vatthūni parigaṇhanti, mahesakkhānaṁ tattha raññaṁ rājamahāmattānaṁ cittāni namanti nivesanāni māpetuṁ. [164]

Yasmiṁ padese majjhimā Devatā vatthūni parigaṇhanti, majjhimānaṁ tattha raññaṁ rājamahāmattānaṁ cittāni namanti nivesanāni māpetuṁ. [165]

Yasmiṁ padese nīcā Devatā vatthūni parigaṇhanti, nīcānaṁ tattha raññaṁ rājamahāmattānaṁ cittāni namanti nivesanāni māpetuṁ. [166]

Yāvatā Ānanda Ariyaṁ āyatanaṁ, yāvatā vaṇippatho, Thai: viṇippatho.14 idaṁ agganagaraṁ bhavissati Pāṭaliputtaṁ puṭabhedanaṁ. Pāṭaliputtassa kho Ānanda tayo antarāyā bhavissanti: aggito vā udakato vā mithubhedā vā.” ti [167]

Atha kho Sunīdha-Vassakārā Magadhamahāmattā yena Bhagavā tenupasaṅkamiṁsu, upasaṅkamitvā Bhagavatā saddhiṁ sammodiṁsu, sammodanīyaṁ kathaṁ sārāṇīyaṁ vītisāretvā, ekam-antaṁ aṭṭhaṁsu. Ekam-antaṁ ṭhitā kho Sunīdha-Vassakārā Magadhamahāmattā Bhagavantaṁ etad-avocuṁ: [168]

“Adhivāsetu no bhavaṁ Thai: no Bhante bhavaṁ; ChS: no Bhante.15 Gotamo, ajjatanāya bhattaṁ saddhiṁ Bhikkhusaṅghenā.” ti [169]

Adhivāsesi Bhagavā tuṇhībhāvena. Atha kho Sunīdha-Vassakārā Magadhamahāmattā Bhagavato adhivāsanaṁ viditvā, yena sako āvasatho tenupasaṅkamiṁsu, upasaṅkamitvā, sake āvasathe, paṇītaṁ khādanīyaṁ bhojanīyaṁ paṭiyādāpetvā, Bhagavato kālaṁ ārocāpesuṁ: BJT: ārocepesuṁ; Thai, ChS: ārocepāsuṁ.16 [170]

“Kālo bho Gotama niṭṭhitaṁ bhattan.”-ti [171]

Atha kho Bhagavā, pubbaṇhasamayaṁ nivāsetvā, pattacīvaram-ādāya, saddhiṁ Bhikkhusaṅghena, yena Sunīdha-Vassakārānaṁ Magadhamahāmattānaṁ āvasatho tenupasaṅkami, upasaṅkamitvā, paññatte āsane nisīdi. [172]

Atha kho Sunīdha-Vassakārā Magadhamahāmattā Buddhappamukhaṁ Bhikkhusaṅghaṁ paṇītena khādanīyena bhojanīyena PTS: khādaniyena bhojaniyena, and similarly throughout, PED favours the long vowel in these forms.17 sahatthā santappesuṁ sampavāresuṁ. Atha kho Sunīdha-Vassakārā Magadhamahāmattā, Bhagavantaṁ bhuttāviṁ onītapattapāṇiṁ, PTS: oṇīta-, PED favours the dental.18 aññataraṁ nīcaṁ āsanaṁ gahetvā, ekam-antaṁ nisīdiṁsu. [173]

Ekam-antaṁ nisinne kho Sunīdha-Vassakāre Magadhamahāmatte Bhagavā imāhi gāthāhi anumodi: [174]

Sīlavantettha bhojetvā, saññate brahmacārino, BJT, ChS, PTS: brahmacārayo, but the correct form for plural masculines in -ī is -ino.21

Yā tattha Devatā āsuṁ PTS: assu. The translation would then be: who may be in that place.22 tāsaṁ dakkhiṇam-ādise. [175]

Atha kho Bhagavā Sunīdha-Vassakāre Magadhamahāmatte imāhi gāthāhi anumoditvā, uṭṭhāyāsanā, pakkāmi. Tena kho pana samayena Sunīdha-Vassakārā Magadhamahāmattā Bhagavantaṁ piṭṭhito piṭṭhito anubandhā BJT, PTS: anubaddhā.23 honti: [177]

“Yenajja samaṇo Gotamo dvārena nikkhamissati taṁ Gotamadvāraṁ nāma bhavissati, yena titthena Gaṅgaṁ nadiṁ Thai: Gaṅgānadiṁ, compound form of text reading.24 tarissati taṁ Gotamatitthaṁ nāma bhavissatī.” ti Atha kho Bhagavā yena dvārena nikkhami taṁ Gotamadvāraṁ nāma ahosi. [178]

Atha kho Bhagavā yena Gaṅgā nadī tenupasaṅkami. Tena kho pana samayena Gaṅgā nadī pūrā hoti samatittikā kākapeyyā. Appekacce manussā nāvaṁ pariyesanti, appekacce uḷumpaṁ pariyesanti, appekacce kullaṁ bandhanti, apārāpāraṁ BJT: orā pāraṁ; Thai: pārā pāraṁ; PTS: aparāparaṁ, here and below.25 gantukāmā. [179]

Atha kho Bhagavā seyyathā pi nāma balavā puriso sammiñjitaṁ vā bāhaṁ pasāreyya, pasāritaṁ vā bāhaṁ sammiñjeyya, ChS: samiñjeyya, similarly throughout. Although there is no historical reason for the doubling of the consonant it appears this is the normal way the form is written in Pāḷi.26 evam-eva PTS: evam evaṁ.27 Gaṅgāya nadiyā orimatīre Thai: orime tīre, parsed form of the compound.28 antarahito, pārimatīre Thai: pārime tīre, parsed form of the compound.29 paccuṭṭhāsi saddhiṁ Bhikkhusaṅghena. Addasā kho Bhagavā te manusse, appekacce nāvaṁ pariyesante, appekacce uḷumpaṁ pariyesante, appekacce kullaṁ bandhante, apārāpāraṁ gantukāme. [181]

Atha kho Bhagavā, etam-atthaṁ viditvā, tāyaṁ velāyaṁ imaṁ udānaṁ udānesi: [182]

“Ye taranti aṇṇavaṁ saraṁ,

−−−−⏑⏑¦−⏑−⏑−−   Opacchandasaka This line is hypermetrical by 2 measures, and the last line is a prior line in posterior position. Not understanding the metre, Rhys-Davids in his translation suggests rewriting the lines which is not neccesary.30
Setuṁ katvāna, visajja pallalāni.

Kullaṁ hi jano pabandhati, Thai: kullaṁ jano ca bandhati, probably an attempt to conform the metre to a Siloka.31
