Atha kho Bhagavā Nādike yathābhirantaṁ viharitvā, āyasmantaṁ Ānandaṁ āmantesi: [245]

“Āyām' Ānanda yena Vesālī BJT: Vesāli, here; PTS: Vesāli throughout.02 tenupasaṅkamissāmā.” ti [246]

“Evaṁ Bhante,” ti kho āyasmā Ānando Bhagavato paccassosi. Atha kho Bhagavā mahatā bhikkhusaṅghena saddhiṁ yena Vesālī tad-avasari. Tatra sudaṁ Bhagavā Vesāliyaṁ viharati Ambapālivane. Tatra kho Bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi: [247]

“Sato bhikkhave bhikkhu vihareyya sampajāno ayaṁ vo Thai: te.03 amhākaṁ anusāsanī. Kathañ-ca bhikkhave bhikkhu sato hoti? [248]

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu kāye kāyānupassī viharati, ātāpī sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṁ; vedanāsu vedanānupassī viharati, ātāpī sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṁ; citte cittānupassī viharati, ātāpī sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṁ; dhammesu dhammānupassī viharati, ātāpī sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṁ. Evaṁ kho bhikkhave bhikkhu sato hoti. [249]

Kathañ-ca bhikkhave bhikkhu sampajāno hoti? [250]

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu abhikkante paṭikkante sampajānakārī hoti, ālokite vilokite sampajānakārī hoti, sammiñjite pasārite sampajānakārī hoti, saṅghāṭipattacīvaradhāraṇe sampajānakārī hoti, asite pīte khāyite sāyite sampajānakārī hoti, uccārapassāvakamme sampajānakārī hoti, gate ṭhite nisinne, sutte jāgarite, bhāsite tuṇhībhāve sampajānakārī hoti. Evaṁ kho bhikkhave bhikkhu sampajāno hoti. Sato bhikkhave bhikkhu vihareyya sampajāno ayaṁ vo amhākaṁ anusāsanī.” ti [251]

Assosi kho Ambapālī gaṇikā: “Bhagavā kira Vesāliṁ BJT, PTS: Vesāliyaṁ, normally anupatto takes the accusative rather than the locative, compare the section on the Licchavīs just below.04 anuppatto Vesāliyaṁ viharati mayhaṁ Ambavane.” ti [252]

Atha kho Ambapālī gaṇikā bhaddāni bhaddāni yānāni yojāpetvā, bhaddaṁ bhaddaṁ BJT, PTS omit second bhaddaṁ, also below.05 yānaṁ abhiruhitvā, bhaddehi bhaddehi yānehi Vesāliyā niyyāsi, yena sako ārāmo tena pāyāsi yāvatikā yānassa bhūmi yānena gantvā, yānā paccorohitvā, pattikā va yena Thai: pattikā yena.06 Bhagavā tenupasaṅkami, upasaṅkamitvā Bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā, ekam-antaṁ nisīdi. Ekam-antaṁ nisinnaṁ kho Ambapāliṁ gaṇikaṁ Bhagavā Dhammiyā kathāya sandassesi, samādapesi, samuttejesi, sampahaṁsesi. Atha kho Ambapālī gaṇikā, PTS: Ambapāli-gaṇikā, here in compound, also below (but not above).07 Bhagavatā Dhammiyā kathāya sandassitā samādapitā samuttejitā sampahaṁsitā, Bhagavantaṁ etad-avoca: [254]

“Adhivāsetu me Bhante Bhagavā svātanāya bhattaṁ saddhiṁ bhikkhusaṅghenā.” ti [255]

Adhivāsesi Bhagavā tuṇhībhāvena. Atha kho Ambapālī gaṇikā Bhagavato adhivāsanaṁ viditvā, uṭṭhāyāsanā, Bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā padakkhiṇaṁ katvā pakkāmi. Assosuṁ kho Vesālikā Licchavī: [256]

“Bhagavā kira Vesāliṁ anuppatto Vesāliyaṁ viharati Ambapālivane.” ti [257]

Atha kho te Licchavī, bhaddāni bhaddāni yānāni yojāpetvā, bhaddaṁ bhaddaṁ yānaṁ abhiruhitvā, bhaddehi bhaddehi yānehi Vesāliyā niyyiṁsu. BJT: nīyiṁsu, alternate spelling.08 Tatra ekacce Licchavī nīlā honti nīlavaṇṇā nīlavatthā nīlālaṅkārā, ekacce Licchavī pītā honti pītavaṇṇā pītavatthā pītālaṅkārā, ekacce Licchavī lohitā Thai: lohitikā, and similarly throughout; PTS: lohitikā, here only. Lohita and lohitaka both mean red.09 honti lohitavaṇṇā lohitavatthā lohitālaṅkārā, ekacce Licchavī odātā honti odātavaṇṇā odātavatthā odātālaṅkārā. [258]

Atha kho Ambapālī gaṇikā daharānaṁ daharānaṁ Licchavīnaṁ akkhena akkhaṁ cakkena cakkaṁ yugena yugaṁ Thai: yuggena yuggaṁ, here and below, this must be a mistake though.10 paṭivaṭṭesi. Atha kho te PTS omits te.11 Licchavī Ambapāliṁ gaṇikaṁ etad-avocuṁ: [259]

“Kiṁ je Ambapāli daharānaṁ daharānaṁ Licchavīnaṁ akkhena akkhaṁ cakkena cakkaṁ yugena yugaṁ paṭivaṭṭesī?” ti [260]

“Tathā hi pana me ayyaputtā Bhagavā nimantito, svātanāya bhattaṁ saddhiṁ bhikkhusaṅghenā.” ti [261]

“Dehi je Ambapāli etaṁ bhattaṁ satasahassenā.” ti [262]

“Sace pi me Thai: sace hi me.12 ayyaputtā Vesāliṁ sāhāraṁ dassatha evam-ahaṁ taṁ Thai: evam-pi mahantaṁ; PTS: evaṁ-mahantaṁ.13 bhattaṁ na dassāmī.” ti Atha kho te Licchavī aṅgulī poṭhesuṁ: BJT, ChS: aṅguliṁ poṭesuṁ, here and below. It would seem a plural is required as one finger is hard to snap.14 [263]

“Jitamhā ChS: Jitamha, also below, but the form is incorrect.15 vata bho Ambakāya, jitamhā PTS: vañcit' amhā, which would mean we have been deceived.16 vata bho Ambakāyā.” ti Thai: Jitamhā vata bho Ambapālikāya vañcitamhā vata bho Ambapālikāyā ti.17 [264]

Atha kho te Licchavī yena Ambapālivanaṁ tena pāyiṁsu. Addasā BJT: Adaddasā, printing error.18 kho Bhagavā te Licchavī dūrato va āgacchante, disvā ChS, Thai: disvāna, alternate form of the absolutive.19 bhikkhū āmantesi: [265]

“Yesaṁ bhikkhave bhikkhūnaṁ devā Tāvatiṁsā adiṭṭhā, ChS, Thai: adiṭṭhapubbā = who have not formerly seen.20 oloketha bhikkhave Licchaviparisaṁ, apaloketha BJT, Thai, PTS: avaloketha, which is just another form of oloketha, and therefore unlikely to occur here.21 bhikkhave Licchaviparisaṁ, upasaṁharatha bhikkhave Licchaviparisaṁ Tāvatiṁsasadisan.”-ti PTS: Tāvatiṁaparisan’ ti, which would give an awkward meaning: who are the Tāvatiṁsa assembly.22 [266]

Atha kho te Licchavī yāvatikā yānassa bhūmi yānena gantvā, yānā paccorohitvā, pattikā va yena Bhagavā tenupasaṅkamiṁsu, upasaṅkamitvā Bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā, ekam-antaṁ nisīdiṁsu. [267]

Ekam-antaṁ nisinne kho te Licchavī Bhagavā Dhammiyā kathāya sandassesi, samādapesi, samuttejesi, sampahaṁsesi. Atha kho te Licchavī Bhagavatā Dhammiyā kathāya sandassitā samādapitā samuttejitā sampahaṁsitā, Bhagavantaṁ etad-avocuṁ: [268]

“Adhivāsetu no Bhante Bhagavā svātanāya bhattaṁ saddhiṁ bhikkhusaṅghenā.” ti BJT adds here: Atha kho Bhagavā te Licchavī etad-avoca.23 [269]

“Adhivutthaṁ Thai: Adhivāsitaṁ; it seems though that the past participle is as in the text.24 kho me Licchavī svātanāya Ambapāliyā gaṇikāya Thai, PTS: Ambapāligaṇikāya; compound form of the text reading.25 bhattan.”-ti Atha kho te Licchavī aṅgulī poṭhesuṁ: [270]

“Jitamhā vata bho Ambakāya Jitamhā vata bho Ambakāyā.” ti [271]

Atha kho te Licchavī Bhagavato bhāsitaṁ abhinanditvā anumoditvā, uṭṭhāyāsanā, Bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā padakkhiṇaṁ katvā pakkamiṁsu. Atha kho Ambapālī gaṇikā tassā rattiyā accayena, sake ārāme paṇītaṁ khādanīyaṁ bhojanīyaṁ paṭiyādāpetvā, Bhagavato kālaṁ ārocāpesi: [272]

“Kālo Bhante niṭṭhitaṁ bhattan.”-ti [273]

Atha kho Bhagavā, pubbaṇhasamayaṁ nivāsetvā, pattacīvaram-ādāya, saddhiṁ Bhikkhusaṅghena, yena Ambapāliyā gaṇikāya nivesanaṁ Thai: parivesanaṁ; PTS: Ambapāli-gaṇikāya parivesanā. Parivesana means (food)-distribution.26 tenupasaṅkami, upasaṅkamitvā paññatte āsane nisīdi. [274]

Atha kho Ambapālī gaṇikā Buddhappamukhaṁ PTS: Buddha-pamukhaṁ, and similarly elsewhere.27 Bhikkhusaṅghaṁ paṇītena khādanīyena bhojanīyena sahatthā santappesi sampavāresi. [275]

Atha kho Ambapālī gaṇikā Bhagavantaṁ bhuttāviṁ onītapattapāṇiṁ, aññataraṁ nīcaṁ āsanaṁ gahetvā ekam-antaṁ nisīdi. Ekam-antaṁ nisinnā kho Ambapālī gaṇikā Bhagavantaṁ etad-avoca: [276]

“Imāhaṁ Bhante ārāmaṁ Buddhappamukhassa Bhikkhusaṅghassa dammī.” ti [277]

Paṭiggahesi Bhagavā ārāmaṁ. Atha kho Bhagavā Ambapāliṁ gaṇikaṁ PTS: Ambapāli-gaṇikaṁ; compound form of the text reading.28 Dhammiyā kathāya sandassetvā samādapetvā samuttejetvā sampahaṁsetvā uṭṭhāyāsanā pakkāmi. [278]

Tatra pi Thai omits pi.29 sudaṁ Bhagavā Vesāliyaṁ viharanto Ambapālivane, etad-eva bahulaṁ bhikkhūnaṁ Dhammiṁ kathaṁ karoti: [279]

“Iti sīlaṁ, iti samādhi, iti paññā, sīlaparibhāvito samādhi mahapphalo hoti mahānisaṁso, samādhiparibhāvitā paññā mahapphalā hoti mahānisaṁsā, paññāparibhāvitaṁ cittaṁ sammad-eva āsavehi vimuccati, seyyathīdaṁ: kāmāsavā bhavāsavā avijjāsavā.” ti [280]
