[Dutiyabhāṇavāraṁ]

[16: Bhagavato Ābādho] The Rains Retreat mentioned in this section started 10 months before the Parinibbāna.01

Atha kho Bhagavā Ambapālivane yathābhirantaṁ viharitvā, āyasmantaṁ Ānandaṁ āmantesi: [281]

“Āyām' Ānanda yena Beluvagāmako Thai, ChS: Veḷuvagāmako, and similarly throughout. In the manuscripts there is an alternation between b/v; and which is original is impossible to know now. 02 tenupasaṅkamissāmā.” ti [282]

“Evaṁ Bhante,” ti kho āyasmā Ānando Bhagavato paccassosi. Atha kho Bhagavā mahatā bhikkhusaṅghena saddhiṁ yena Beluvagāmako tad-avasari. Tatra sudaṁ Bhagavā Beluvagāmake viharati. Tatra kho Bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi: [283]

“Etha tumhe bhikkhave samantā Vesāliṁ yathāmittaṁ yathāsandiṭṭhaṁ yathāsambhattaṁ Vassaṁ upetha, Thai: upagacchatha, this verb form is probably influenced by its use in the next line. 03 ahaṁ pana idheva Beluvagāmake Vassaṁ upagacchāmī.” ti [284]

“Evaṁ Bhante,” ti kho te bhikkhū Bhagavato paṭissutvā, Thai, ChS: paṭissuṇitvā, alternate form of the absolutive. 04 samantā Vesāliṁ yathāmittaṁ yathāsandiṭṭhaṁ yathāsambhattaṁ Vassaṁ upagacchiṁsu. Thai: upagacchuṁ, PTS: upagañchuṁ, alternate form of the plural. 05 Bhagavā pana tattheva Beluvagāmake Vassaṁ upagacchi. PTS: upagañchi. 06 [285]

Atha kho Bhagavato Vassūpagatassa kharo ābādho uppajji, bāḷhā vedanā vattanti maraṇantikā. BJT, ChS, PTS: māraṇantikā. PED favours the simple -a-. 07 Tā sudaṁ Thai: Tatra sudaṁ. 08 Bhagavā sato sampajāno adhivāsesi BJT, PTS: adhivāseti, but we need an aorist. 09 avihaññamāno. Atha kho Bhagavato etad-ahosi: [286]

“Na kho me taṁ paṭirūpaṁ yohaṁ ChS: yvāhaṁ, alternate form. 10 anāmantetvā upaṭṭhāke, anapaloketvā Bhikkhusaṅghaṁ parinibbāyeyyaṁ. Yannūnāhaṁ PTS: Yan nunāhaṁ. 11 imaṁ ābādhaṁ viriyena paṭippaṇāmetvā, BJT: paṭippanāmetvā; ChS: paṭipaṇāmetvā, and similarly throughout. 12 jīvitasaṅkhāraṁ adhiṭṭhāya vihareyyan.”-ti [287]

Atha kho Bhagavā taṁ ābādhaṁ viriyena paṭippaṇāmetvā, jīvitasaṅkhāraṁ adhiṭṭhāya vihāsi. Atha kho Bhagavato so ābādho paṭippassambhi. Atha kho Bhagavā gilānā vuṭṭhito, aciravuṭṭhito Gelaññā Vihārā nikkhamma Vihārapacchāyāyaṁ Thai: Vihārappacchāyāyaṁ, but gemination is not warranted in this word. 13 paññatte āsane nisīdi. [288]

Atha kho āyasmā Ānando yena Bhagavā tenupasaṅkami, upasaṅkamitvā Bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā, ekam-antaṁ nisīdi. Ekam-antaṁ nisinno kho āyasmā Ānando Bhagavantaṁ etad-avoca: [289]

“Diṭṭho me Thai: diṭṭhā; PTS diṭṭhā me, but a singular is required by the context. 14 Bhante Bhagavato phāsu, diṭṭhaṁ me Thai omits me. 15 Bhante Bhagavato khamanīyaṁ, api ca PTS: hi. 16 me Bhante madhurakajāto viya kāyo, disā pi me na pakkhāyanti, dhammā pi maṁ na paṭibhanti, BJT: nappaṭibhanti. Because of the close syntactic relationship of the negative with the word it modifies we sometimes see it joined like this as if in composition. 17 Bhagavato gelaññena api ca me Bhante ahosi, kācid-eva assāsamattā na tāva Bhagavā parinibbāyissati na yāva Bhagavā Bhikkhusaṅghaṁ ārabbha kiñcid-eva udāharatī.” ti [290]

“Kiṁ pan' Ānanda bhikkhusaṅgho mayi paccāsiṁsati? ChS: paccāsīsati, alternate spelling of the word, showing the iṁ/ī alternation. 18 Desito Ānanda mayā Dhammo anantaraṁ abāhiraṁ karitvā, natth' Ānanda PTS: na tatth' Ānanda. 19 Tathāgatassa Dhammesu ācariyamuṭṭhi. Yassa nūna Ānanda evam-assa: [291]

‘Ahaṁ Bhikkhusaṅghaṁ pariharissāmī’ ti vā ‘mamuddesiko Thai: mamuddesako. 20 bhikkhusaṅgho’ ti vā so nūna Ānanda Bhikkhusaṅghaṁ ārabbha kiñcid-eva udāhareyya. Tathāgatassa kho Ānanda na evaṁ hoti: [292]

‘Ahaṁ kho ChS, PTS omit kho. 21 Bhikkhusaṅghaṁ pariharissāmī’ ti vā ‘mamuddesiko Bhikkhusaṅgho’ ti vā. Sa PTS omits Sa. 22 kiṁ Ānanda Tathāgato Bhikkhusaṅghaṁ ārabbha kiñcid-eva udāharissati? [293]

Ahaṁ kho pan' Ānanda etarahi jiṇṇo vuḍḍho mahallako, addhagato vayo-anuppatto asītiko BJT, ChS: āsītiko. PED favours the short a-. 23 me vayo vattati. [294]

Seyyathā pi Ānanda jarasakaṭaṁ veḷumissakena BJT: jajjarasakaṭaṁ vekkhamissakena; ChS: jajjarasakaṭaṁ veṭhamissakena; PTS: vegha-missakena, and similarly below. As can be seen there is a lot of confusion as to the correct reading here, and consequently there must be doubt about the translation. 24 yāpeti, evam-eva kho Ānanda veḷumissakena maññe Tathāgatassa kāyo yāpeti. Yasmiṁ Ānanda samaye Tathāgato sabbanimittānaṁ amanasikārā, ekaccānaṁ vedanānaṁ nirodhā, animittaṁ cetosamādhiṁ upasampajja viharati, phāsutaro PTS: phāsukato, which would mean: (the Realised One's body) is made comfortable. 25 Ānanda tasmiṁ samaye Tathāgatassa kāyo hoti. Tasmātih' Ānanda attadīpā viharatha attasaraṇā anaññasaraṇā This section from here to the end should be compared with Ukkācelasuttaṁ, SN Satipaṭṭhānasaṁyuttaṁ, 49.14. Idh' Ānanda, bhikkhu kāye kāyānupassī viharati, ātāpī sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṁ. Vedanāsu vedanānupassī viharati, ātāpī sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṁ. Citte cittānupassī viharati, ātāpī sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṁ. Dhammesu dhammānupassī viharati, ātāpī sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṁ. Evaṁ kho Ānanda bhikkhu attadīpo viharati attasaraṇo anaññasaraṇo, Dhammadīpo Dhammasaraṇo anaññasaraṇo. [298]

Ye hi keci Ānanda etarahi vā mama PTS: mamaṁ, alternate form of the genitive. 28 vā accayena, attadīpā viharissanti attasaraṇā anaññasaraṇā Dhammadīpā Dhammasaraṇā anaññasaraṇā, tama-t-agge me te Ānanda bhikkhū bhavissanti - ye keci sikkhākāmā.” ti [299]
