Mahāparinibbānasuttaṁ (DN 16)

[Tatiyabhāṇavāraṁ]

[19: Aṭṭha Bhūmicālahetū] cf. Bhūmicālasuttaṁ (Part Two) (AN Bk. 8:70). Rhys-Davids in his translation suggests that the narrative is interrupted by what follows, but it seems to me that this section about the earthquakes follows quite naturally in the course of the narrative. The sections that follow this however appear to be foreign to the text, perhaps inserted through association with this section. See the Introduction.01

Atha kho āyasmato Ānandassa etad-ahosi: [341]

“Acchariyaṁ vata bho abbhutaṁ Thai: abbhūtaṁ, and similarly throughout.02 vata bho mahā vatāyaṁ bhūmicālo, sumahā vatāyaṁ bhūmicālo bhiṁsanako lomahaṁso PTS: salomahaṁso here and below, but compare above.03 Devadundubhiyo Thai: Devadundabhiyo, and similarly throughout.04 ca phaliṁsu. Ko nu kho hetu ko paccayo mahato bhūmicālassa pātubhāvāyā?” ti [342]

Atha kho āyasmā Ānando yena Bhagavā tenupasaṅkami, upasaṅkamitvā Bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā, ekam-antaṁ nisīdi. Ekam-antaṁ nisinno kho āyasmā Ānando Bhagavantaṁ etad-avoca: [343]

“Acchariyaṁ Bhante abbhutaṁ Bhante mahā vatāyaṁ Bhante bhūmicālo, sumahā vatāyaṁ Bhante bhūmicālo, bhiṁsanako lomahaṁso Devadundubhiyo ca phaliṁsu. Ko nu kho Bhante hetu ko paccayo mahato bhūmicālassa pātubhāvāyā?” ti. [344]

“Aṭṭha kho ime Ānanda hetū aṭṭha paccayā mahato bhūmicālassa pātubhāvāya. [345]

Katame aṭṭha? [346]

  1. Ayaṁ Ānanda Mahāpaṭhavī ChS: -pathavī, and similarly throughout. The Burmese texts normally have the dental -t- in this word.05 udake patiṭṭhitā, udakaṁ vāte patiṭṭhitaṁ, vāto ākāsaṭṭho. Hoti so kho Ānanda BJT: ākāsaṭṭho hoti. Hoti kho so Ānanda; PTS ākāsaṭṭho hoti. So kho Ānando.06 samayo yaṁ mahāvātā vāyanti, mahāvātā vāyantā, udakaṁ kampenti, udakaṁ kampitaṁ, Paṭhaviṁ kampeti. Ayaṁ paṭhamo hetu paṭhamo paccayo mahato bhūmicālassa pātubhāvāya. [347]

  2. Puna caparaṁ Ānanda samaṇo vā hoti brāhmaṇo vā iddhimā cetovasippatto Devo vā mahiddhiko mahānubhāvo, PTS: Devatā vā mahiddhikā mahānubhāvā, which is a plural form of the same sentence.07 tassa PTS: yassa.08 parittā Paṭhavisaññā bhāvitā hoti appamāṇā āposaññā, so imaṁ Paṭhaviṁ kampeti saṅkampeti sampakampeti sampavedheti. Ayaṁ dutiyo hetu dutiyo paccayo mahato bhūmicālassa pātubhāvāya. [348]

  3. Puna caparaṁ Ānanda yadā Bodhisatto Tusitā kāyā ChS: Tusitakāyā, compound form of the reading in the text.09 cavitvā, sato sampajāno mātukucchiṁ okkamati, tadāyaṁ Paṭhavī kampati saṅkampati sampakampati sampavedhati. Ayaṁ tatiyo hetu tatiyo paccayo mahato bhūmicālassa pātubhāvāya. [349]

  4. Puna caparaṁ Ānanda yadā Bodhisatto sato sampajāno mātukucchimhā BJT: mātukucchimhiṁ, printing error; PTS: mātu-kucchismā, alternate form of the ablative.10 nikkhamati, tadāyaṁ Paṭhavī kampati saṅkampati sampakampati sampavedhati. Ayaṁ catuttho hetu catuttho paccayo mahato bhūmicālassa pātubhāvāya. [350]

  5. Puna caparaṁ Ānanda yadā Tathāgato anuttaraṁ Sammāsambodhiṁ abhisambujjhati, tadāyaṁ Paṭhavī kampati saṅkampati sampakampati sampavedhati. Ayaṁ pañcamo hetu pañcamo paccayo mahato bhūmicālassa pātubhāvāya. [351]

  6. Puna caparaṁ Ānanda yadā Tathāgato anuttaraṁ Dhammacakkaṁ pavatteti, Thai: pavattesi, aorist form which doesn't fit here.11 tadāyaṁ Paṭhavī kampati saṅkampati sampakampati sampavedhati. Ayaṁ chaṭṭho hetu chaṭṭho paccayo mahato bhūmicālassa pātubhāvāya. [352]

  7. Puna caparaṁ Ānanda yadā Tathāgato sato sampajāno āyusaṅkhāraṁ ossajati, Thai, ChS, PTS: ossajjati.12 tadāyaṁ Paṭhavī kampati saṅkampati sampakampati sampavedhati. Ayaṁ sattamo hetu sattamo paccayo mahato bhūmicālassa pātubhāvāya. [353]

  8. Puna caparaṁ Ānanda yadā Tathāgato anupādisesāya Nibbānadhātuyā parinibbāyati, tadāyaṁ Paṭhavī kampati saṅkampati sampakampati sampavedhati. Ayaṁ aṭṭhamo hetu aṭṭhamo paccayo mahato bhūmicālassa pātubhāvāya. [354]
