Tena kho pana samayena āyasmā Upavāṇo Bhagavato purato ṭhito hoti Bhagavantaṁ vījamāno. ChS: bījayamāno.01 Atha kho Bhagavā āyasmantaṁ Upavāṇaṁ apasādeti: ChS: apasāresi, and similarly below.02 [616]

“Apehi bhikkhu mā me purato aṭṭhāsī.” ti [617]

Atha kho āyasmato Ānandassa etad-ahosi: [618]

“Ayaṁ kho āyasmā Upavāṇo dīgharattaṁ Bhagavato upaṭṭhāko santikāvacaro samīpacārī. Atha ca pana Bhagavā pacchime kāle āyasmantaṁ Upavāṇaṁ apasādeti, BJT, PTS: apasādesi, here and immediately below, thereafter apasādeti.03 ‘Apehi bhikkhu mā me purato aṭṭhāsī.’ ti Ko nu kho hetu ko paccayo yaṁ Bhagavā āyasmantaṁ Upavāṇaṁ apasādeti: ‘Apehi bhikkhu mā me purato aṭṭhāsī.’ ” ti Atha kho āyasmā Ānando Bhagavantaṁ etad-avoca: [619]

“Ayaṁ Bhante āyasmā Upavāṇo dīgharattaṁ Bhagavato upaṭṭhāko santikāvacaro samīpacārī. “Yebhuyyena Ānanda dasasu BJT adds sahassīsu, which would mean: from the ten thousand world-elements.05 lokadhātūsu Devatā sannipatitā Tathāgataṁ dassanāya yāvatā Ānanda Kusinārā Upavattanaṁ Mallānaṁ Sālavanaṁ samantato dvādasa yojanāni natthi so padeso vālaggakoṭinittudanamatto Thai: -nituda-; ChS: -nitudda-.06 pi mahesakkhāhi Devatāhi apphuṭo, [621]

Devatā Ānanda ujjhāyanti: ‘Dūrā vatamhā āgatā Tathāgataṁ dassanāya, kadāci karahaci Tathāgatā loke uppajjanti Arahanto Sammāsambuddhā, Thai: Tathāgato loke uppajjati Arahaṁ Sammāsambuddho; i.e. singular form of the same sentence.07 ajjeva PTS: ajja ca.08 rattiyā pacchime yāme Thai, PTS: pacchimayāme, compound form of the phrase.09 Tathāgatassa Parinibbānaṁ bhavissati, ayañ-ca mahesakkho bhikkhu Bhagavato purato ṭhito ovārento, na mayaṁ labhāma pacchime kāle Tathāgataṁ dassanāyā’.” ti PTS adds here: Devatā Ānanda ujjhāyantī ti, which was already stated at the beginning of the sentence.10 [622]

“Kathaṁbhūtā pana Bhante Bhagavā Devatā manasikarotī?” Thai: manasikarontī, plural form which lacks concinnity.11 ti [623]

“Sant' Ānanda Devatā ākāse Paṭhavīsaññiniyo PTS: paṭhavi-.12 kese pakiriya kandanti bāhā paggayha kandanti chinnapātaṁ PTS: chinnapapādaṁ; Thai: chinnapādaṁ viya, throughout.13 papatanti āvaṭṭanti vivaṭṭanti: ‘Atikhippaṁ Bhagavā parinibbāyissati, atikhippaṁ Sugato parinibbāyissati, atikhippaṁ Cakkhumā BJT: Cakkhu; ChS, PTS: Cakkhuṁ, throughout, but we need an epithet here, and Cakkhu (by itself) is not used as such elsewhere as far as I have seen.14 loke antaradhāyissatī!’ ti [624]

Sant' Ānanda Devatā Paṭhaviyaṁ Thai, PTS: Paṭhaviyā, alternate form of the locative.15 Paṭhavīsaññiniyo kese pakiriya kandanti bāhā paggayha kandanti chinnapātaṁ papatanti āvaṭṭanti vivaṭṭanti, ‘Atikhippaṁ Bhagavā parinibbāyissati, atikhippaṁ Sugato parinibbāyissati, atikhippaṁ Cakkhumā loke antaradhāyissatī!’ ” ti [625]

Yā pana tā Devatā vītarāgā tā satā sampajānā BJT: sampajānadā, printing error.16 adhivāsenti: ‘Aniccā saṅkhārā taṁ kutettha labbhā?’ ” ti [626]
