“Pubbe Bhante disāsu Vassaṁ vutthā ChS: vuṭṭhā.01 bhikkhū āgacchanti Tathāgataṁ dassanāya, te mayaṁ labhāma manobhāvanīye bhikkhū dassanāya labhāma payirupāsanāya. BJT: payirupāsānāya, here only, printing error; Thai: payirūpāsanāya, and similarly throughout.02 Bhagavato pana mayaṁ Bhante accayena na labhissāma manobhāvanīye bhikkhū dassanāya na labhissāma payirupāsanāyā.” ti [627]

  1. ‘Idha Tathāgato jāto’ ti Ānanda, saddhassa kulaputtassa dassanīyaṁ saṁvejanīyaṁ ṭhānaṁ.

  2. ‘Idha Tathāgato anuttaraṁ Sammāsambodhiṁ abhisambuddho’ ti Ānanda, saddhassa kulaputtassa dassanīyaṁ saṁvejanīyaṁ ṭhānaṁ.

  3. ‘Idha Tathāgatena anuttaraṁ Dhammacakkaṁ pavattitan’-ti Ānanda, saddhassa kulaputtassa dassanīyaṁ saṁvejanīyaṁ ṭhānaṁ.

  4. ‘Idha Tathāgato anupādisesāya nibbānadhātuyā parinibbuto’ ti Ānanda, saddhassa kulaputtassa dassanīyaṁ saṁvejanīyaṁ ṭhānaṁ. [630]

Imāni kho Ānanda cattāri saddhassa kulaputtassa dassanīyāni saṁvejanīyāni ṭhānāni. Āgamissanti kho Ānanda saddhā bhikkhū bhikkhuniyo upāsakā upāsikāyo PTS: bhikkhu-bhikkhuniyo upāsaka-upāsikāyo, compound forms od what is written out in the text.04 ‘Idha Tathāgato jāto’ ti pi, ‘Idha Tathāgato anuttaraṁ sammāsambodhiṁ abhisambuddho’ ti pi, ‘Idha Tathāgatena anuttaraṁ Dhammacakkaṁ pavattitan’-ti pi, ‘Idha Tathāgato anupādisesāya Nibbānadhātuyā parinibbuto’ ti pi, ye hi keci Ānanda Cetiyacārikaṁ āhiṇḍantā pasannacittā kālaṁ karissanti sabbe te kāyassa bhedā param-maraṇā sugatiṁ saggaṁ lokaṁ upapajjissantī.” ti PTS: uppajjissantī ti.05 [631]

“Kathaṁ mayaṁ Bhante Tathāgatassa sarīre paṭipajjāmā?” ti [638]

“Abyāvaṭā tumhe Ānanda hotha Tathāgatassa sarīrapūjāya. Thai: sarīraṁ pūjāya, parsed form of the compound in the text.08 [639]

Iṅgha tumhe Ānanda sadatthe ChS: sāratthe, throughout, which would mean (live striving for) the essential good.09 ghaṭatha sadatthe anuyuñjatha, BJT: sadattham anuyujjatha; PTS: sadattham anuyuñjatha, these are singular forms of the accusative.10 sadatthe appamattā ātāpino pahitattā viharatha. Sant' Ānanda Khattiyapaṇḍitā pi brāhmaṇapaṇḍitā pi gahapatipaṇḍitā pi Tathāgate abhippasannā. Te Tathāgatassa sarīrapūjaṁ karissantī.” ti [640]

“Yathā kho Ānanda Rañño Cakkavattissa sarīre paṭipajjanti, evaṁ Tathāgatassa sarīre paṭipajjitabban.”-ti [642]

“Kathaṁ pana Bhante Rañño Cakkavattissa sarīre paṭipajjantī?” ti BJT: sarire paṭipajjanti ti, printing errors.12 [643]

“Rañño Ānanda Cakkavattissa sarīraṁ ahatena vatthena veṭhenti, ahatena vatthena veṭhetvā vihatena kappāsena veṭhenti, vihatena kappāsena veṭhetvā ahatena vatthena veṭhenti, etenupāyena Thai, PTS: etena upāyena, the text has the forms in sandhi.13 pañcahi yugasatehi Rañño Cakkavattissa sarīraṁ Thai: sarīre.14 veṭhetvā āyasāya Thai, PTS: ayasāya, throughout. PED favours the long a.15 teladoṇiyā pakkhipitvā, aññissā āyasāya doṇiyā paṭikujjetvā, ChS, Thai: paṭikkujjitvā; BJT: paṭikkujjitvā, and similarly throughout.16 sabbagandhānaṁ citakaṁ karitvā, Rañño Cakkavattissa sarīraṁ jhāpenti, cātummahāpathe ChS: cātumahāpathe, throughout.17 Rañño Cakkavattissa thūpaṁ karonti. Evaṁ kho Ānanda Rañño Cakkavattissa sarīre paṭipajjanti, yathā kho Ānanda Rañño Cakkavattissa sarīre paṭipajjanti evaṁ Tathāgatassa sarīre paṭipajjitabbaṁ, cātummahāpathe Tathāgatassa thūpo kātabbo Tattha ye Thai adds te.18 mālaṁ vā gandhaṁ vā cuṇṇakaṁ PTS: vaṇṇakaṁ; it would mean make-up, which doesn't seem appropriate.19 vā āropessanti vā PTS omits , but it is needed to complete the alternatives.20 abhivādessanti vā cittaṁ vā pasādessanti, tesaṁ taṁ bhavissati dīgharattaṁ hitāya sukhāyā. PTS is singular in form (though a collective in meaning), which requires the next variant.28 cittaṁ pasādenti, PTS: pasādeti, throughout; for concinnity with bahujano.29 te tattha cittaṁ pasādetvā, kāyassa bhedā param-maraṇā sugatiṁ saggaṁ lokaṁ upapajjanti. Idaṁ kho Ānanda atthavasaṁ paṭicca Paccekasambuddho Thūpāraho. [648]

Kiñc' Ānanda atthavasaṁ paṭicca Tathāgatassa sāvako Thūpāraho? ‘Ayaṁ tassa Bhagavato Arahato Sammāsambuddhassa sāvakassa thūpo,’ Thai, PTS: sāvakathūpo; compound form.32 ti Ānanda bahū janā cittaṁ pasādenti, te tattha cittaṁ pasādetvā, kāyassa bhedā param-maraṇā sugatiṁ saggaṁ lokaṁ upapajjanti. Idaṁ kho Ānanda atthavasaṁ paṭicca Tathāgatassa sāvako Thūpāraho. [649]

Kiñc' Ānanda atthavasaṁ paṭicca Rājā Cakkavattī Thūpāraho? ‘Ayaṁ tassa BJT omits tassa.33 Dhammikassa Dhammarañño Thūpo,’ ti Ānanda bahū janā cittaṁ pasādenti, te tattha cittaṁ pasādetvā, kāyassa bhedā param-maraṇā sugatiṁ saggaṁ lokaṁ upapajjanti.
