[7. Nāḷāgiri]

Sattamapañhe, Nāḷāgirī ti Dhanapālako hatthī māraṇatthāya pesito.

Atīte kira Bodhisatto, hatthigopako hutvā, nibbatto hatthiṁ āruyha, vicaramāno mahāpathe Paccekabuddhaṁ disvā, “Kuto gacchati ChS, Thai: āgacchati; coming.1 ayaṁ muṇḍako?” ti āhatacitto khilajāto taṁ SHB, ChS, Thai: omit taṁ.2 hatthinā āsādesi.

So tena kammena apāyesu anekavassasahassāni dukkhaṁ anubhavitvā, pacchimattabhāve Buddho jāto.

Devadatto Ajātasatturājānaṁ sahāyaṁ katvā, “Tvaṁ, Mahārāja, Pitaraṁ ghātetvā Rājā hohi, ahaṁ Buddhaṁ māretvā, Buddho bhavissāmī!” ti

Saññāpetvā ekadivasaṁ Rañño anuññātāya, hatthisālaṁ gantvā, “Sve tumhe Nāḷāgiriṁ SHB: Nāḷāgiri: nominative, where an accusative is needed.3 soḷasasurāghaṭe pāyetvā, Bhagavantaṁ ChS, Thai: Bhagavato.4 piṇḍāya caraṇavelāyaṁ SHB adds: Nāḷāgiriṁ.5 pesethā!” ti hatthigopake āṇāpesi.

Sakalanagaraṁ mahākolāhalaṁ ahosi, “Buddhanāgena hatthināgassa yuddhaṁ passissāmā!” ti ubhato rājavīthiyaṁ mañcātimañcaṁ bandhitvā, pāto va sannipatiṁsu.

Bhagavā pi katasarīrapaṭijaggano, Bhikkhusaṅghaparivuto Rājagahaṁ piṇḍāya pāvisi.

Tasmiṁ khaṇe vuttaniyāmeneva Nāḷāgiriṁ SHB: Nāḷāgiri; nominative, where an accusative is needed.6 vissajjesuṁ. So vīthicaccarādayo vidhamento PTS: vidhamanto; the non-causative form, scattering.7 āgacchati. Tadā ekā itthi ChS, Thai, PTS: itthī.8 dārakaṁ gahetvā, vīthito vīthiṁ gacchati, hatthī taṁ itthiṁ disvā, anubandhi.

Bhagavā: “Nāḷāgiri, na taṁ hanatthāya SHB, PTS: atthāya; (not sent) for her.9 pesito, idhāgacchāhī!” ti āha. So taṁ saddaṁ sutvā, Bhagavantābhimukho dhāvi. Bhagavā SHB: Bhāgavā; printer's error.10 aparimāṇesu cakkavāḷesu anantasattesu pharaṇārahaṁ mettaṁ ekasmiṁ yeva Nāḷāgirimhi phari. So Bhagavatā ChS, Thai, PTS: Bhagavato.11 mettāya phuṭo, nibbhayo hutvā, Bhagavato pādamūle nipati. Bhagavā tassa matthake hatthaṁ ṭhapesi.

Tadā devabrahmādayo, acchariyabbhutajātacittā, pupphaparāgādīhi PTS: puppharāgādīhi; it is hard to find a good meaning for it in this form.12 pūjesuṁ. Sakalanagare jaṇṇukamattā SHB, PTS: jannuka-; showing the n/ alternation.13 dhanarāsayo SHB, PTS: -rāsiyo; taking rāsi as a feminine noun.14 ahesuṁ.

Rājā: “Pacchimadvāre dhanāni nagaravāsīnaṁ hontu, Puratthimadvāre dhanāni Rājabhaṇḍāgāre hontū!” ti bheriṁ carāpesi. Sabbe tathā kariṁsu.

Tadā Nāḷāgiri Dhanapālo nāma ahosi. Bhagavā Veḷuvanārāmaṁ agamāsi.
