Appendix: More Udānas

1: The Exalted Utterances

(Note that the texts in this section have been gathered from the Burmese edition
of the text as published on the Chaṭṭha Saṅgāyana CDROM, version 3)

We can look first at the udānas that may be described as exalted utterances, which are of a similar kind to most of the ones we are dealing with in the Udāna collection.

First we have an udāna uttered by the Buddha to Māgandiya, which served as a heading for a further exposition (MN.75):

Atha kho Bhagavā tāyaṁ velāyaṁ imaṁ udānaṁ udānesi:

“Ārogyaparamā lābhā, ~ nibbānaṁ paramaṁ sukhaṁ,
Aṭṭhaṅgiko ca maggānaṁ, ~ khemaṁ amatagāminan”-ti.

Perhaps the most famous udāna which was not uttered by the Buddha himself is the one attributed to Aṅgulimāla after attaining arahantship (MN.86; Th 871-886): In the commentaries many of the Thera- and Therī-gāthās are also called udānas.01

Atha kho āyasmā Aṅgulimālo rahogato paṭisallīno vimuttisukhaṁ paṭisaṁvedi, tāyaṁ velāyaṁ imaṁ udānaṁ udānesi:

“Yo pubbeva pamajjitvā, ~ pacchā so nappamajjati,

Svāgataṁ nāpagataṁ, ~ na-y-idaṁ dummantitaṁ mama,
Tisso vijjā anuppattā, ~ kataṁ Buddhassa sāsanan”-ti.

Next we have a number of devatās praising giving, which is followed by the Buddha's reply (which is not called an udāna in this discourse) (Devatāsaṁyutta SN 1.33, Sādhusuttaṁ), the first line uttered by the devatās is really an exclamation, and so this discourse bridges the two types of udāna:

Sāvatthi-ārāme. Atha kho sambahulā Satullapakāyikā devatāyo abhikkantāya rattiyā abhikkantavaṇṇā kevalakappaṁ Jetavanaṁ obhāsetvā yena Bhagavā tenupasaṅkamiṁsu, upasaṅkamitvā Bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ aṭṭhaṁsu.

Ekamantaṁ ṭhitā kho ekā devatā Bhagavato santike imaṁ udānaṁ udānesi:

“Sādhu kho, mārisa, dānaṁ.

Maccherā ca pamādā ca, ~ evaṁ dānaṁ na dīyati,
Puññaṁ ākaṅkhamānena, ~ deyyaṁ hoti vijānatā” ti.

Atha kho aparā devatā Bhagavato santike imaṁ udānaṁ udānesi:

“Sādhu kho, mārisa, dānaṁ api ca appasmim-pi sāhu dānaṁ.

Appasmeke pavecchanti, ~ bahuneke na dicchare;
Appasmā dakkhiṇā dinnā, ~ sahassena samaṁ mitā” ti.

Atha kho aparā devatā Bhagavato santike imaṁ udānaṁ udānesi:

“Sādhu kho, mārisa, dānaṁ appasmim-pi sāhu dānaṁ, api ca saddhāya pi sāhu dānaṁ.

Dānañ-ca yuddhañ-ca samānam-āhu,
Appā pi santā bahuke jinanti,
Appam-pi ce saddahano dadāti,
Teneva so hoti sukhī paratthā” ti.

Atha kho aparā devatā Bhagavato santike imaṁ udānaṁ udānesi:

“Sādhu kho, mārisa, dānaṁ appasmim-pi sāhu dānaṁ, saddhāya pi sāhu dānaṁ, api ca dhammaladdhassa pi sāhu dānaṁ.

Yo dhammaladdhassa dadāti dānaṁ,
Uṭṭhānaviriyādhigatassa jantu;
Atikkamma so Vetaraṇiṁ Yamassa,
Dibbāni ṭhānāni upeti macco” ti.

Atha kho aparā devatā Bhagavato santike imaṁ udānaṁ udānesi:

“Sādhu kho, mārisa, dānaṁ, appasmim-pi sāhu dānaṁ, saddhāya pi sāhu dānaṁ, dhammaladdhassa pi sāhu dānaṁ, api ca viceyyadānam-pi sāhu.

Viceyyadānaṁ sugatappasatthaṁ,
Ye dakkhiṇeyyā idha jīvaloke,
Etesu dinnāni mahapphalāni,
Bījāni vuttāni yathā sukhette” ti.

Atha kho aparā devatā Bhagavato santike imaṁ udānaṁ udānesi:

“Sādhu kho, mārisa, dānaṁ, appasmim-pi sāhu dānaṁ, saddhāya pi sāhu dānaṁ, dhammaladdhassa pi sāhu dānaṁ, viceyyadānam-pi sāhu, api ca pāṇesu pi sādhu saṁyamo.

Yo pāṇabhūtāni aheṭhayaṁ caraṁ,
Parūpavādā na karoti pāpaṁ,
Bhīruṁ pasaṁsanti na hi tattha sūraṁ,
Bhayā hi santo na karoti pāpan”-ti.

Atha kho aparā devatā Bhagavantaṁ etad-avoca: “Kassa nu kho, Bhagavā, subhāsitan”-ti?

“Sabbāsaṁ vo subhāsitaṁ pariyāyena, api ca mamāpi suṇātha:

Addhā hi dānaṁ bahudhā pasatthaṁ,
Dānā ca kho dhammapadaṁ va seyyo,
Pubbe ca te pubbatare ca santo,
Nibbānam-evajjhagamuṁ sapaññā” ti.
