2: Ajapālakathā

Atha kho Bhagavā sattāhassa accayena, tamhā samādhimhā vuṭṭhahitvā, Bodhirukkhamūlā yena Ajapālanigrodho tenupasaṅkami, upasaṅkamitvā Ajapālanigrodharukkhamūle sattāhaṁ ekapallaṅkena nisīdi vimuttisukhapaṭisaṁvedī.

Atha kho aññataro huhuṅkajātiko Thai: huṁhukajātiko; ChS: huṁhuṅkajātiko, there seems to be much confusion over this word in the texts and it is impossible to know which is the correct form.01 brāhmaṇo yena Bhagavā tenupasaṅkami, upasaṅkamitvā Bhagavatā saddhiṁ sammodi, sammodanīyaṁ kathaṁ sārāṇīyaṁ PTS: sāraṇīya-, always this spelling, but PED sārāṇīya-.02 vītisāretvā ekam-antaṁ aṭṭhāsi. Ekam-antaṁ ṭhito kho so brāhmaṇo Bhagavantaṁ etad-avoca:

“Kittāvatā nu kho bho Gotama brāhmaṇo hoti? Katame ca pana brāhmaṇakaraṇā dhammā?” ti

Atha kho Bhagavā, etam-atthaṁ viditvā, tāyaṁ velāyaṁ imaṁ udānaṁ udānesi:

Nihuhuṅkako PTS: Nihuhuṅko; Thai: Nīhuṁhuko, ChS: Nihuṁhuṅko.03 nikkasāvo PTS: nikasāvo, = nir + kasāva, which would lead us to expect gemination.04 yatatto,

Dhammena so Brahmavādaṁ PTS: so brāhmaṇo Brahmavādaṁ, which is three syllables hypermetric.06 vadeyya,
