4: Rājāyatanakathā

Atha kho Bhagavā sattāhassa accayena, tamhā samādhimhā vuṭṭhahitvā, Mucalindamūlā yena Rājāyatanaṁ tenupasaṅkami, upasaṅkamitvā Rājāyatanamūle sattāhaṁ ekapallaṅkena nisīdi vimuttisukhapaṭisaṁvedī.

Tena kho pana samayena Tapussabhallikā BJT: Tapassu-, throughout.01 vāṇijā Ukkalā taṁ desaṁ addhānamaggappaṭipannā BJT, PTS, Thai: -paṭipannā, but gemination is to be expected = prati- in Sanskrit.02 honti. Atha kho Tapussabhallikānaṁ vāṇijānaṁ ñātisālohitā devatā Tapussabhallike vāṇije etad-avoca: “Ayaṁ Mārisā Bhagavā Rājāyatanamūle viharati paṭhamābhisambuddho. Gacchatha taṁ Bhagavantaṁ manthena ca madhupiṇḍikāya ca paṭimānetha taṁ vo bhavissati dīgharattaṁ hitāya sukhāyā.” ti

Atha kho Tapussabhallikā vāṇijā manthañ-ca madhupiṇḍikañ-ca ādāya yena Bhagavā tenupasaṅkamiṁsu, upasaṅkamitvā Bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā, ekam-antaṁ aṭṭhaṁsu. Ekam-antaṁ ṭhitā kho Tapussabhallikā vāṇijā Bhagavantaṁ etad-avocuṁ: “Paṭiggaṇhātu BJT, PTS: -g-, and similar spelling throughout. PED gives this spelling as a by-form = Sanskrit Prati-.03 no Bhante Bhagavā manthañ-ca madhupiṇḍikañ-ca yaṁ amhākaṁ assa dīgharattaṁ hitāya sukhāyā.” ti

Atha kho Bhagavato etad-ahosi: “Na kho Tathāgatā hatthesu paṭiggaṇhanti, kim-hi nu kho ahaṁ paṭiggaṇheyyaṁ manthañ-ca madhupiṇḍikañ-cā?” ti Atha kho Cattāro Mahārājāno BJT, Thai: Mahārājā, which form is due to transference to the -a stem.04 Bhagavato cetasā cetoparivitakkam-aññāya catuddisā cattāro selamaye patte Bhagavato upanāmesuṁ: “Idha Bhante Bhagavā paṭiggaṇhātu manthañ-ca madhupiṇḍikañ-cā.” ti

Paṭiggahesi Bhagavā paccagghe selamaye patte manthañ-ca madhupiṇḍikañ-ca, paṭiggahetvā PTS: paṭiggahetvā here, against its usual spelling. ChS omits the following: ca.05 ca paribhuñji.

Atha kho Tapussabhallikā vāṇijā Bhagavantaṁ etad-avocuṁ: PTS, ChS: Tapussabhallikā vāṇijā Bhagavantaṁ onītapattapāṇiṁ viditvā Bhagavato pādesu sirisā nipatitvā Bhagavanataṁ etad-avocuṁ; the merchants Tapussa and Bhallika, when the Gracious One had eaten and washed his hand and bowl, and they had worshipped the Gracious One with their heads, said this to the Gracious One; the shorter form is probably more original with the longer being included through standardisation.06 “Ete mayaṁ Bhante Bhagavantaṁ saraṇaṁ gacchāma Dhammañ-ca, upāsake no Bhagavā dhāretu ajjatagge pāṇupete saraṇaṁ gate,” ti te ca PTS: te va.07 loke paṭhamaṁ upāsakā ahesuṁ dvevācikā.
