[8: Isipatanasamosaraṇaṁ]

Atha kho Bhagavā anupubbena cārikaṁ caramāno yena Bārāṇasī Isipatanaṁ Migadāyo PTS: Isipatanamigadāyo; compound form of the words.01 yena pañcavaggiyā bhikkhū tenupasaṅkami.

Addasaṁsu kho pañcavaggiyā bhikkhū Bhagavantaṁ dūrato va āgacchantaṁ disvāna aññam-aññaṁ ChS: aññamaññaṁ katikaṃ saṇṭhapesuṁ; they resolved on this agreement.02 saṇṭhapesuṁ: “Ayaṁ āvuso Samaṇo Gotamo āgacchati bāhuliko, PTS, Thai, ChS: bāhulliko, also in the repetition below.03 padhānavibbhanto āvatto bāhullāya. So neva abhivādetabbo na paccuṭṭhātabbo, nāssa pattacīvaraṁ paṭiggahetabbaṁ, PTS: -gg-, against its normal practice.04 api ca kho āsanaṁ ṭhapetabbaṁ sace ChS: sace so; adding the pronoun, which can, however, be understood.05 ākaṅkhissati nisīdissatī.” ti

Yathā yathā kho Bhagavā pañcavaggiye bhikkhū upasaṅkamati tathā tathā te pañcavaggiyā bhikkhū sakāya katikāya asaṇṭhahantā, BJT: tathā tathā te pañcavaggiyā bhikkhū nāsakkhiṁsu sakāya katikāya saṇṭhātuṁ asaṇṭhahantā, which gives more or less the same meaning in different words. Strangely, no variant reading in recorded in BJT here, which differs so much from all the other texts. ChS: tathā tathā pañcavaggiyā bhikkhū nāsakkhiṁsu sakāya katikāya saṇṭhātuṁ.06 Bhagavantaṁ paccuggantvā, eko Bhagavato pattacīvaraṁ paṭiggahesi, eko āsanaṁ paññāpesi, ChS: paññapesi, alternate form.07 eko pādodakaṁ pādapīṭhaṁ pādakathalikaṁ ChS: eko pādodakaṁ eko pādapīṭhaṁ eko pādakathalikaṁ; one placed the water (for washing) the feet, one placed the foot-stool, and one placed the foot-stand.08 upanikkhipi. nisīdi Bhagavā paññatte āsane, nisajja kho Bhagavā pāde pakkhālesi.

Apissu Bhagavantaṁ nāmena ca āvusovādena ca samudācaranti. Evaṁ vutte Bhagavā pañcavaggiye bhikkhū etad-avoca: “Mā bhikkhave Tathāgataṁ nāmena ca āvusovādena ca samudācarittha, PTS, ChS: samudācaratha, but normally takes the past tense verb, not the imperative.09 Arahaṁ bhikkhave Tathāgato Sammāsambuddho, odahatha bhikkhave sotaṁ, Amatam-adhigataṁ aham-anusāsāmi, ahaṁ Dhammaṁ desemi, yathānusiṭṭhaṁ tathā Thai, ChS omit: tathā, here and below.10 paṭipajjamānā, na cirasseva, yassatthāya kulaputtā sammad-eva agārasmā anagāriyaṁ pabbajanti, tad-anuttaraṁ brahmacariyapariyosānaṁ, diṭṭhe va dhamme sayaṁ abhiññā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharissathā.” ti

Evaṁ vutte pañcavaggiyā bhikkhū Bhagavantaṁ etad-avocuṁ: “Tāya pi kho tvaṁ āvuso Gotama cariyāya, BJT, ChS: iriyāya, here and below, it would have more or less the same meaning.11 tāya paṭipadāya tāya dukkarakārikāya, nevajjhagā uttarimanussadhammaṁ BJT, ChS: -dhammā, plural form, similarly below.12 alam-ariyañāṇadassanavisesaṁ. Kiṁ pana tvaṁ etarahi bāhuliko, padhānavibbhanto, āvatto bāhullāya, adhigamissasi uttarimanussadhammaṁ alam-ariyañāṇadassanavisesan?”-ti

Evaṁ vutte Bhagavā pañcavaggiye bhikkhū etad-avoca: “Na bhikkhave Tathāgato bāhuliko, na padhānavibbhanto, na āvatto bāhullāya. Arahaṁ bhikkhave Tathāgato Sammāsambuddho, odahatha bhikkhave sotaṁ Amatam-adhigataṁ aham-anusāsāmi, ahaṁ Dhammaṁ desemi yathānusiṭṭhaṁ thatā paṭipajjamānā, na cirasseva, yassatthāya kulaputtā sammad-eva agārasmā anagāriyaṁ pabbajanti, tad-anuttaraṁ brahmacariyapariyosānaṁ, diṭṭhe va dhamme sayaṁ abhiññā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharissathā.” ti

Dutiyam-pi kho pañcavaggiyā bhikkhū Bhagavantaṁ etad-avocuṁ: All editions abbreviate: ...etad-avocuṁ ... dutiyam pi kho bhagavā pañcavaggiye bhikkhū edtad avoca ... tatiyam pi...13 “Tāya pi kho tvaṁ āvuso Gotama cariyāya, tāya paṭipadāya tāya dukkarakārikāya, nevajjhagā uttarimanussadhammaṁ alam-ariyañāṇadassanavisesaṁ. Kiṁ pana tvaṁ etarahi bāhuliko, padhānavibbhanto, āvatto bāhullāya, adhigamissasi uttarimanussadhammaṁ alam-ariyañāṇadassanavisesan?”-ti

Dutiyam-pi kho Bhagavā pañcavaggiye bhikkhū etad-avoca: ChS abbreviates: etadavoca ...pe... tatiyampi...14 “Na bhikkhave Tathāgato bāhuliko, na padhānavibbhanto, na āvatto bāhullāya. Arahaṁ bhikkhave Tathāgato Sammāsambuddho, odahatha bhikkhave sotaṁ Amatam-adhigataṁ aham-anusāsāmi, ahaṁ Dhammaṁ desemi yathānusiṭṭhaṁ tathā paṭipajjamānā, na cirasseva, yassatthāya kulaputtā sammad-eva agārasmā anagāriyaṁ pabbajanti, tad-anuttaraṁ brahmacariyapariyosānaṁ, diṭṭhe va dhamme sayaṁ abhiññā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharissathā.” ti

Tatiyam-pi kho pañcavaggiyā bhikkhū Bhagavantaṁ etad-avocuṁ: “Tāya pi kho tvaṁ āvuso Gotama cariyāya, tāya paṭipadāya PTS abbreviates: ...tāya paṭipadāya ... alam ariyañāṇadassanavisesan ti.15 tāya dukkarakārikāya, nevajjhagā uttarimanussadhammaṁ alam-ariyañāṇadassanavisesaṁ. Kiṁ pana tvaṁ etarahi bāhuliko, padhānavibbhanto, āvatto bāhullāya, adhigamissasi uttarimanussadhammaṁ alam-ariyañāṇadassanavisesan?”-ti

Evaṁ vutte Bhagavā pañcavaggiye bhikkhū etad-avoca: “Abhijānātha me no tumhe bhikkhave ito pubbe evarūpaṁ bhāsitam-etan?”-ti Thai omits: evarūpaṁ; ChS evarūpaṁ pabhāvitametan-ti, which does not give a good meaning.16 “No hetaṁ Bhante.” “Arahaṁ bhikkhave Tathāgato Sammāsambuddho, odahatha PTS abbreviates: ...odahatha ... viharissathā 'ti.17 bhikkhave sotaṁ Amatam-adhigataṁ aham-anusāsāmi, ahaṁ Dhammaṁ desemi yathānusiṭṭhaṁ tathā paṭipajjamānā, Thai: paṭijjamānā, printer's error.18 na cirasseva, yassatthāya kulaputtā sammad-eva agārasmā anagāriyaṁ pabbajanti, tad-anuttaraṁ brahmacariyapariyosānaṁ, diṭṭhe va dhamme sayaṁ abhiññā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharissathā,” ti asakkhi kho Bhagavā pañcavaggiye bhikkhū saññāpetuṁ.

Atha kho pañcavaggiyā bhikkhū Bhagavantaṁ PTS adds: puna; (listened) again.19 sussūsiṁsu, sotaṁ odahiṁsu aññāya cittaṁ PTS: aññācittaṁ, sandhi form; ChS: aññā cittaṁ, nominative form?20 upaṭṭhāpesuṁ.
