[III: Uruvelapāṭihāriyāni] This section with its miracle-working and supernatural elements stands out from the rest of the narrative which seems in many ways to be so realistic.01

21: Paṭhamaṁ Pāṭihāriyaṁ ChS has: uruvelapāṭihāriyakathā here, but paṭhamaṁ pāṭihāriyaṁ as the end-title.01 (Gajjaṁ)

Atha kho Bhagavā anupubbena cārikaṁ caramāno yena Uruvelā tad-avasari. Tena kho pana samayena Uruvelāyaṁ tayo jaṭilā paṭivasanti: Uruvelakassapo Nadīkassapo Gayākassapo ti.

Tesu Uruvelakassapo jaṭilo pañcannaṁ jaṭilasatānaṁ nāyako hoti vināyako aggo pamukho pāmokkho. Nadīkassapo jaṭilo tiṇṇaṁ jaṭilasatānaṁ nāyako hoti vināyako aggo pamukho pāmokkho. Gayākassapo jaṭilo dvinnaṁ jaṭilasatānaṁ nāyako hoti vināyako aggo pamukho pāmokkho.

Atha kho Bhagavā yena Uruvelakassapassa jaṭilassa assamo tenupasaṅkami, upasaṅkamitvā Uruvelakassapaṁ jaṭilaṁ etad-avoca: “Sace te Kassapa agaru vaseyyāma ekarattiṁ PTS: -rattaṁ, similarly throughout, but the word is ratti.02 agyāgāre.” ti

“Na kho me Mahāsamaṇa garu, caṇḍettha Thai: api ca kho caṇḍettha, similarly throughout.03 Nāgarājā iddhimā āsīviso PTS, ChS: āsi-, and similarly throughout.04 ghoraviso, so taṁ mā viheṭhesī.” ti

Dutiyam-pi kho Bhagavā Uruvelakassapaṁ jaṭilaṁ etad-avoca: “Sace te Kassapa agaru vaseyyāma ekarattiṁ agyāgāre.” ti

“Na kho me Mahāsamaṇa garu, caṇḍettha Nāgarājā iddhimā āsīviso ghoraviso, so taṁ mā viheṭhesī.” ti

Tatiyam-pi kho Bhagavā Uruvelakassapaṁ jaṭilaṁ etad-avoca: “Sace te Kassapa agaru vaseyyāma ekarattiṁ agyāgāre.” ti

“Na kho me Mahāsamaṇa garu, caṇḍettha Nāgarājā iddhimā āsīviso ghoraviso, BJT omits ghoraviso, presumably a printer's error.05 so taṁ mā viheṭhesī.” ti

“Appeva maṁ na viheṭheyya iṅgha tvaṁ Kassapa anujānāhi agyāgāran”.-ti

“Vihara Mahāsamaṇa yathāsukhan.”-ti

Atha kho Bhagavā agyāgāraṁ pavisitvā tiṇasantharakaṁ paññāpetvā, nisīdi, pallaṅkaṁ ābhujitvā, ujuṁ kāyaṁ paṇidhāya, parimukhaṁ satiṁ upaṭṭhapetvā. PTS: upaṭṭhāpetvā, both forms are found in the texts.06

Atha kho so Nāgo addasa PTS omits addasa; ChS: addasā kho so nāgo.07 Bhagavantaṁ paviṭṭhaṁ, disvāna dukkhī dummano padhūpāsi. BJT omits: dukkhī; ChS reads: disvāna dukkhī padhūpāyi.08 Atha kho Bhagavato etad-ahosi: “Yan-nūnāhaṁ imassa Nāgassa anupahacca chaviñ-ca cammañ-ca maṁsañ-ca nhāruñ-ca BJT: nahāruñca, and similarly throughout, inserting the epenthetic vowel.09 aṭṭhiñ-ca aṭṭhimiñjañ-ca tejasā tejaṁ pariyādiyeyyan?”-ti Thai: pariyādeyyan ti, presumably taking the verb to pariyādāti.10 Atha kho Bhagavā tathārūpaṁ iddhābhisaṅkhāraṁ abhisaṅkhāritvā padhūpāsi. ChS: padhūpāyi, throughout, this appears to be an alternate form of the aorist.11

Atha kho so Nāgo makkhaṁ asahamāno BJT: dukkhaṁ asahamāno, unbearably miserable; Thai: asahanto, alternate form of the present particle.12 pajjali. Bhagavā pi tejodhātuṁ samāpajjitvā pajjali, ubhinnaṁ sajotibhūtānaṁ Thai: sañjoti-, and similarly throughout, but I cannot locate this form in the dictionaries.13 agyāgāraṁ ādittaṁ viya hoti, sampajjalitaṁ sajotibhūtaṁ.

Atha kho te jaṭilā agyāgāraṁ parivāretvā evam-āhaṁsu: “Abhirūpo vata bho Mahāsamaṇo Nāgena viheṭhiyatī.” ti PTS: viheṭhiyissatī ti, he will be harrassed, future tense, but the present tense seems more appropriate when commenting on an ongoing event.14

Atha kho Bhagavā tassā rattiyā accayena, tassa Nāgassa anupahacca chaviñ-ca cammañ-ca, maṁsañ-ca nhāruñ-ca aṭṭhiñ-ca aṭṭhimiñjañ-ca, tejasā tejaṁ pariyādayitvā, PTS: pariyādiyitvā, also elsewhere.15 patte pakkhipitvā, Uruvelakassapassa jaṭilassa dassesi: “Ayaṁ te Kassapa Nāgo pariyādinno assa tejasā tejo.” ti

Atha kho Uruvelakassapassa jaṭilassa etad-ahosi: “Mahiddhiko kho Mahāsamaṇo mahānubhāvo, yatra hi nāma caṇḍassa Nāgarājassa iddhimato āsīvisassa ghoravisassa tejasā tejaṁ pariyādayissati, na tveva ca kho Arahā yathā ahan.”-ti
