[IV. Rājagahe]

[40: Veḷuvanadānaṁ]

Atha kho Rājā Māgadho Seniyo Bimbisāro, tassā rattiyā accayena, paṇītaṁ khādanīyaṁ bhojanīyaṁ paṭiyādāpetvā, Bhagavato kālaṁ ārocāpesi: “Kālo bhante niṭṭhitaṁ bhattan.”-ti

Atha kho Bhagavā, pubbaṇhasamayaṁ nivāsetvā, pattacīvaram-ādāya, Rājagahaṁ pāvisi, mahatā Bhikkhusaṅghena saddhiṁ, bhikkhusahassena sabbeheva purāṇajaṭilehi.

Tena kho pana samayena Sakko Devānam-indo, māṇavakavaṇṇaṁ abhinimminitvā, Buddhappamukhassa Bhikkhusaṅghassa BJT: saṅghassa, omits Bhikkhu-.01 purato purato gacchati imā gāthāyo gāyamāno:

−−¦−−¦⏑⏑⏑¦¦⏑−⏑¦⏑⏑−¦⏑[−⏑−−]−⏑¦−−¦−   Ariyā
Danto dantehi saha purāṇajaṭilehi Vippamutto Vippamuttehi, The metre of these verses is incorrect in the posterior part of the first line. If we read Danto dantehī saha purāṇajaṭilehi Vippamuttehi (and similarly throughout) it would scan as −−¦−−¦−⏑⏑¦⏑−⏑¦⏑⏑−¦⏑−⏑¦−−¦− which would give a perfect   Ariyā verse. The translation it seems to me would be better too: The Tamed One with the Tamed, with the Liberated former yogis.02

−−¦−⏑⏑¦−−,¦¦−⏑⏑¦−−¦⏑¦−⏑⏑¦−
Siṅgīnikkhasuvaṇṇo BJT, ChS: -savaṇṇo, beautiful.03 Rājagahaṁ pāvisī BJT, Thai, ChS: pāvisi, which spoils the metre, same below.04 Bhagavā.

−−¦−−¦⏑⏑⏑¦¦⏑−⏑¦⏑⏑−¦⏑[−⏑−−]−⏑¦−−¦−
Mutto muttehi saha purāṇajaṭilehi vippamutto vippamuttehi,

−−¦−⏑⏑¦−−,¦¦−⏑⏑¦−−¦⏑¦−⏑⏑¦−
Siṅgīnikkhasuvaṇṇo Rājagahaṁ pāvisī Bhagavā.

−−¦−−¦⏑⏑⏑¦¦⏑−⏑¦⏑⏑−¦⏑[−⏑−−]−⏑¦−−¦−
Tiṇṇo tiṇṇehi saha purāṇajaṭilehi vippamutto vippamuttehi

−−¦−⏑⏑¦−−,¦¦−⏑⏑¦−−¦⏑¦−⏑⏑¦−
Siṅgīnikkhasuvaṇṇo Rājagahaṁ pāvisī Bhagavā.

−−¦−−¦⏑⏑⏑¦¦⏑−⏑¦⏑⏑−¦⏑[−⏑−−]−⏑¦−−¦−
Santo santehi saha purāṇajaṭilehi vippamutto vippamuttehi, BJT, PTS omit this line and the next.05

−−¦−⏑⏑¦−−,¦¦−⏑⏑¦−−¦⏑¦−⏑⏑¦−
Siṅgīnikkhasuvaṇṇo Rājagahaṁ pāvisī Bhagavā.

⏑⏑−¦−⏑¦⏑⏑−¦¦⏑⏑−¦⏑⏑−¦⏑⏑⏑¦⏑−¦−
Dasavāso Dasabalo Dasadhammavidū Dasabhi cupeto, We could read: Dasavāso pi Dasabalo Dasadhammavidū Dasabhī cūpeto, to correct the metre.06

−⏑⏑¦⏑⏑⏑⏑¦−−,¦¦−⏑⏑¦−−¦⏑¦−⏑⏑¦−
So dasasataparivāro Rājagahaṁ pāvisī Bhagavā.” ti

Manussā Sakkaṁ Devānam-indaṁ passitvā evam-āhaṁsu: “Abhirūpo vatāyaṁ māṇavako dassanīyo vatāyaṁ māṇavako, pāsādiko vatāyaṁ māṇavako, kassa nu kho ayaṁ māṇavako?” ti

Evaṁ vutte Sakko Devānam-indo te manusse gāthāya ajjhabhāsi:

Atha kho Rājā Māgadho Seniyo Bimbisāro sovaṇṇamayaṁ bhiṅkāraṁ Thai: bhiṅgāraṁ, both forms occur in the texts.12 gahetvā, Bhagavato onojesi: Thai, ChS: oṇojesi, showing the n/ṇ alternation.13 “Etāhaṁ Bhante Veḷuvanaṁ uyyānaṁ, Buddhappamukhassa Bhikkhusaṅghassa BJT: saṅghassa, omits Bhikkhu-.14 dammī?” ti
