42: Abhiññātānaṁ Pabbajjā

Tena kho pana samayena abhiññātā abhiññātā Māgadhikā kulaputtā Bhagavati brahmacariyaṁ caranti. Manussā ujjhāyanti khīyanti ChS: khiyyanti, alternate spelling, showing the (short-vowel, double-consonant)/(long-vowel, single-consonant) alternation.01 vipācenti: “Aputtakatāya paṭipanno Samaṇo Gotamo, vedhavyāya paṭipanno Samaṇo Gotamo, kulupacchedāya BJT: kulūpacchedāya, alternate sandhi formation.02 paṭipanno Samaṇo Gotamo, idāni tena PTS, ChS: anena; different pronoun but with the same meaning.03 jaṭilasahassaṁ pabbājitaṁ, imāni ca aḍḍhateyyāni paribbājakasatāni Sañjayāni BJT: Sañjeyyāni.04 pabbājitāni, ime ca abhiññātā abhiññātā Māgadhikā kulaputtā Samaṇe Gotame brahmacariyaṁ carantī,” ti apissu bhikkhū disvā, imāya gāthāya codenti:

“Āgato kho This line is hypermetric, it could easily be fixed by dropping kho here.05 Mahāsamaṇo Māgadhānaṁ Giribbajaṁ

Sabbe Sañjaye netvāna, BJT: Sañjeyyake netvā, which would give the   pathyā cadence.06 kaṁ su dāni nayissatī?” ti

 

Assosuṁ kho bhikkhū tesaṁ manussānaṁ ujjhāyantānaṁ khīyantānaṁ vipācentānaṁ. Atha kho te bhikkhū Bhagavato etam-atthaṁ ārocesuṁ. ChS inserts ...pe... markers, but it is not clear what would need repeating.07 “Na bhikkhave so saddo ciraṁ bhavissati, sattāham-eva bhavissati, sattāhassa accayena antaradhāyissati.  Tena hi bhikkhave ye tumhe imāya gāthāya codenti:

‘Āgato kho Mahāsamaṇo Māgadhānaṁ Giribbajaṁ

Sabbe Sañjaye netvāna, kaṁ su dāni nayissatī?’ ti

 

te tumhe imāya gāthāya paṭicodetha:

‘Nayanti ve Mahāvīrā Saddhammena Tathāgatā,

−−⏑⏑¦⏑−−−¦¦−⏑−−¦⏑−⏑−   pathyā
Dhammena nayamānānaṁ, Thai: nīyamānānaṁ, passive form of the same verb.08 kā usuyyā BJT, ChS: usūyā, alternate spelling, showing the (short-vowel, double-consonant)/(long-vowel, single-consonant) alternation.09 vijānatan.’ ”-ti

 

Tena kho pana samayena manussā bhikkhū disvā imāya gāthāya codenti:

“Āgato kho Mahāsamaṇo Māgadhānaṁ Giribbajaṁ

Sabbe Sañjaye netvāna, kaṁ su dāni nayissatī?” ti

 

bhikkhū te manusse imāya gāthāya paṭicodenti:

 

⏑−⏑−¦⏑−−−¦¦−−−⏑¦⏑−⏑−   pathyā
“Nayanti ve Mahāvīrā Saddhammena Tathāgatā,

−−⏑⏑¦⏑−−−¦¦−⏑−−¦⏑−⏑−   pathyā
Dhammena nayamānānaṁ, kā usuyyā vijānatan?”-ti

⏑−−−¦−⏑⏑−¦¦⏑⏑−−¦⏑−⏑−   bhavipulā
“Manussā Dhammena kira samaṇā Sakyaputtiyā,

 

nenti no adhammenā.” ti It may be we should read nayanti no adhammenā ti here, which is a different form of the verb, and would then give a Siloka prior line.10

Sattāham-eva so saddo ahosi, sattāhassa accayena antaradhāyi.

Catutthabhāṇavāraṁ Niṭṭhitaṁ Thai: Catutthabhāṇavāraṁ niṭṭhitaṁ; ChS: catutthabhāṇavāro niṭṭhito.11
