7-1: Paṭhamabhaddiyasuttaṁ (61)
The First Discourse about Bhaddiya

Evaṁ me sutaṁ:
Thus I heard:

ekaṁ samayaṁ Bhagavā Sāvatthiyaṁ viharati,
at one time the Gracious One was dwelling near Sāvatthī,

Jetavane Anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme.
in Jeta's Wood, at Anāthapiṇḍika's monastery.

Tena kho pana samayena āyasmā Sāriputta
Then at that time venerable Sāriputta

āyasmantaṁ Lakuṇṭakabhaddiyaṁ anekapariyāyena
o was instructing, rousing, enthusing, and cheering

Dhammiyā kathāya sandasseti samādapeti samuttejeti sampahaṁseti.
venerable Bhaddiya the Dwarf in countless ways with a Dhamma talk.

Atha kho āyasmato Lakuṇṭakabhaddiyassa āyasmatā Sāriputtena
o Then while venerable Bhaddiya the Dwarf was being instructed,

anekapariyāyena Dhammiyā kathāya sandassiyamānassa
o roused, enthused, and cheered by venerable Sāriputta

samādapiyamānassa samuttejiyamānassa sampahaṁsiyamānassa,
in countless ways with a Dhamma talk,

anupādāya āsavehi cittaṁ vimucci.
his mind was freed from the pollutants without attachment.

Addasā kho Bhagavā āyasmantaṁ Lakuṇṭakabhaddiyaṁ
The Gracious One saw venerable Bhaddiya the Dwarf

āyasmatā Sāriputtena anekapariyāyena Dhammiyā kathāya
o being instructed, roused, enthused,

sandassiyamānaṁ samādapiyamānaṁ
o and cheered by venerable Sāriputta

samuttejiyamānaṁ sampahaṁsiyamānaṁ,
in countless ways with a Dhamma talk,

anupādāya āsavehi cittaṁ vimuñcamānaṁ.
(and that) his mind was being freed from the pollutants without attachment.

Atha kho Bhagavā, etam-atthaṁ viditvā,
Then the Gracious One, having understood the significance of it,

tāyaṁ velāyaṁ imaṁ udānaṁ udānesi:
on that occasion uttered this exalted utterance:

“Uddhaṁ adho sabbadhi vippamutto
“Above, below, everywhere free,

Ayam-aham-asmī ti anānupassī,
Not contemplating (the conceit) ‘this I am’,

Evaṁ vimutto, udatāri oghaṁ
Free like this, having crossed over the flood

Atiṇṇapubbaṁ apunabbhavāyā” ti.
Not crossed before, with no continuation in existence.”
