[35: Bhūmipāṭihāriyaṁ]

Tena kho pana samayena mahā-akālamegho pāvassi, PTS: vassi. mahā-udakavāhako sañjāyi, yasmiṁ padese Bhagavā viharati so padeso udakena otthaṭo PTS: anuotthaṭo? Thai: otthato. hoti.

Atha kho Bhagavato etad-ahosi: “Yan-nūnāhaṁ samantā udakaṁ ussādetvā, PTS, ChS: ussāretvā, and similarly below, two words having (in this context) the same meaning. majjhe reṇuhatāya BJT: reṇugatāya, and similarly below, we could perhaps translate this as: in the middle of the dust. bhūmiyā caṅkameyyan?” ti Atha kho Bhagavā samantā udakaṁ ussādetvā, majjhe reṇuhatāya bhūmiyā caṅkami.

Atha kho Uruvelakassapo jaṭilo: ‘Mā heva kho Mahāsamaṇo udakena vuḷho ChS: vūḷho, showing the u/ū alternation. ahosī.’ ti nāvāya sambahulehi jaṭilehi saddhiṁ yasmiṁ padese Bhagavā viharati taṁ padesaṁ agamāsi.

Addasā kho Uruvelakassapo jaṭilo Bhagavantaṁ, samantā udakaṁ ussādetvā, majjhe reṇuhatāya bhūmiyā caṅkamantaṁ, disvāna Bhagavantaṁ etad-avoca: “Idha nu BJT: Idan-nu, is that you? tvaṁ Mahāsamaṇā?” ti “Ayam-aham-asmi PTS: ayam ah' asmi, showing elision of the end syllable; Thai: āmahamasmi, yes, it is I. Kassapā,” ti Bhagavā vehāsaṁ abbhuggantvā, nāvāya paccuṭṭhāsi.

Atha kho Uruvelakassapassa jaṭilassa etad-ahosi: “Mahiddhiko kho Mahāsamaṇo mahānubhāvo, yatra hi nāma udakaṁ pi na pavāhissati, BJT, Thai: nappavāhissati, showing the close connection of the negative with the following word; PTS: pavahissati, possibly a printer’s error. na tveva ca kho Arahā yathā ahan.”-ti
