38: Ādittapariyāyaṁ

Atha kho Bhagavā Uruvelāyaṁ yathābhirantaṁ viharitvā, yena Gayāsīsaṁ tena cārikaṁ BJT, ChS omit: cārikaṁ. pakkāmi, mahatā Bhikkhusaṅghena saddhiṁ, bhikkhusahassena sabbeheva purāṇajaṭilehi.

Tatra sudaṁ Bhagavā Gayāyaṁ viharati, Gayāsīse saddhiṁ bhikkhusahassena. Tatra kho Bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi: The following discourse is also found at SN 4.28. “Sabbaṁ bhikkhave ādittaṁ. Kiñ-ca bhikkhave sabbaṁ ādittaṁ?

Cakkhuṁ bhikkhave ādittaṁ, ChS: Cakkhu ādittaṁ; cakkhu is an alternate form of the nominative. rūpā ādittā, cakkhuviññāṇaṁ ādittaṁ, cakkhusamphasso āditto, yam-pidaṁ PTS: yad idaṁ; ChS: yamidaṁ, and so throughout. cakkhusamphassapaccayā uppajjati vedayitaṁ, sukhaṁ vā dukkhaṁ vā adukkhamasukhaṁ vā, tam-pi ādittaṁ.

Kena ādittaṁ? Thai adds a second: ādittaṁ here, which would require parsing the following sentences differently, and would not give a good meaning. Similarly in the repetition below. Rāgagginā dosagginā mohagginā ādittaṁ. Jātiyā jarāya maraṇena, Thai: jarāmaraṇena, but all the other compounds are parsed and listed seperately. sokehi paridevehi dukkhehi domanassehi upāyāsehi ādittan-ti vadāmi.

‘Khīṇā jāti
vusitaṁ brahmacariyaṁ
kataṁ karaṇīyaṁ
nāparaṁ itthattāyā ti pajānātī’ ti.

Imasmiñ-ca pana veyyākaraṇasmiṁ bhaññamāne, tassa bhikkhusahassassa anupādāya āsavehi cittāni vimucciṁsu.
