Chayimā, bhikkhu, dhātuyo:

1. Pathavīdhātu,
2. āpodhātu,
3. tejodhātu,
4. vāyodhātu,
5. ākāsadhātu,
6. viññāṇadhātu. The elements are sometimes listed as just the first four, and in later texts as the expanded six we find here.

1. Katamā ca, bhikkhu, pathavīdhātu?

Pathavīdhātu siyā ajjhattikā, siyā bāhirā.

Katamā ca, bhikkhu, ajjhattikā pathavīdhātu?

Yaṁ ajjhattaṁ, paccattaṁ, kakkhaḷaṁ, kharigataṁ, upādinnaṁ, seyyathīdaṁ:

{1} Kesā, The following analysis of the parts of the body is found frequently in the texts, particularly as a subject for mindfulness (sati) meditation on the body; see section 15 below. Here the constituents are divided between those that are principally hard, under the earth element, and those that are more watery below.

{3} nakhā,
{4} dantā,
{5} taco,
{6} maṁsaṁ,
{7} nahāru,
{8} aṭṭhi,
{9} aṭṭhimiñjā,
{10} vakkaṁ,

Yā ceva kho pana ajjhattikā pathavīdhātu, yā ca bāhirā pathavīdhātu pathavīdhātu­r-evesā: Taṁ netaṁ mama, nesoham-asmi, na meso attā ti, evam-etaṁ yathābhūtaṁ sammappaññāya daṭṭhabbaṁ.

Evam-etaṁ yathābhūtaṁ sammappaññāya disvā, pathavīdhātuyā nibbindati, pathavīdhātuyā cittaṁ virājeti.

2. Katamā ca, bhikkhu, āpodhātu?

Āpodhātu siyā ajjhattikā, siyā bāhirā.

Katamā ca, bhikkhu, ajjhattikā āpodhātu?

Yaṁ ajjhattaṁ, paccattaṁ, āpo, āpogataṁ, upādinnaṁ, seyyathīdaṁ:

{24} sedo,
{25} medo,

3. Katamā ca, bhikkhu, tejodhātu?

Tejodhātu siyā ajjhattikā, siyā bāhirā.

Katamā ca, bhikkhu, ajjhattikā tejodhātu?

Yaṁ ajjhattaṁ, paccattaṁ, tejo tejogataṁ upādinnaṁ, seyyathīdaṁ:

Yena ca santappati, yena ca jīrīyati, yena ca pariḍayhati, yena ca asitapītakhāyitasāyitaṁ sammā pariṇāmaṁ gacchati, yaṁ vā panaññam-pi kiñci ajjhattaṁ, paccattaṁ, tejo, tejogataṁ, upādinnaṁ, ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhu, ajjhattikā tejodhātu.

Yā ceva kho pana ajjhattikā tejodhātu, yā ca bāhirā tejodhātu tejodhātu­r-evesā: Taṁ netaṁ mama, nesoham-asmi, na meso attā ti, evam-etaṁ yathābhūtaṁ sammappaññāya daṭṭhabbaṁ.

Evam-etaṁ yathābhūtaṁ sammappaññāya disvā, tejodhātuyā nibbindati, tejodhātuyā cittaṁ virājeti.

4. Katamā ca, bhikkhu, vāyodhātu?

Vāyodhātu siyā ajjhattikā, siyā bāhirā.

Katamā ca, bhikkhu, ajjhattikā vāyodhātu?

Yaṁ ajjhattaṁ, paccattaṁ, vāyo, vāyogataṁ, upādinnaṁ, seyyathīdaṁ:

Uddhaṅgamā vātā, adhogamā vātā, kucchisayā vātā, koṭṭhāsayā vātā, aṅgamaṅgānusārino vātā, assāso, passāso iti, yaṁ vā panaññam-pi kiñci ajjhattaṁ, paccattaṁ, vāyo, vāyogataṁ, upādinnaṁ, ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhu, ajjhattikā vāyodhātu.

Yā ceva kho pana ajjhattikā vāyodhātu, yā ca bāhirā vāyodhātu vāyodhātu­r-evesā: Taṁ netaṁ mama, nesoham-asmi, na meso attā ti, evam-etaṁ yathābhūtaṁ sammappaññāya daṭṭhabbaṁ.

Evam-etaṁ yathābhūtaṁ sammappaññāya disvā, vāyodhātuyā nibbindati, vāyodhātuyā cittaṁ virājeti.

5. Katamā ca, bhikkhu, ākāsadhātu?

Ākāsadhātu siyā ajjhattikā, siyā bāhirā.

Katamā ca, bhikkhu, ajjhattikā ākāsadhātu?

Yaṁ ajjhattaṁ, paccattaṁ, ākāsaṁ, ākāsagataṁ, upādinnaṁ, seyyathīdaṁ:

Kaṇṇacchiddaṁ nāsacchiddaṁ mukhadvāraṁ, yena ca asitapītakhāyitasāyitaṁ ajjhoharati, yattha ca asitapītakhāyitasāyitaṁ santiṭṭhati, yena ca asitapītakhāyitasāyitaṁ adhobhāgaṁ nikkhamati, yaṁ vā panaññam-pi kiñci ajjhattaṁ, paccattaṁ, ākāsaṁ, ākāsagataṁ, aghaṁ, aghagataṁ, vivaraṁ, vivaragataṁ, asamphuṭṭhaṁ maṁsalohitehi, upādinnaṁ, ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhu, ajjhattikā ākāsadhātu.

Yā ceva kho pana ajjhattikā ākāsadhātu, yā ca bāhirā ākāsadhātu ākāsadhātu­r-evesā: Taṁ netaṁ mama, nesoham-asmi, na meso attā ti: evam-etaṁ yathābhūtaṁ sammappaññāya daṭṭhabbaṁ.

Evam-etaṁ yathābhūtaṁ sammappaññāya disvā, ākāsadhātuyā nibbindati, ākāsadhātuyā cittaṁ virājeti.

6. Athāparaṁ viññāṇaṁ yeva avasissati parisuddhaṁ pariyodātaṁ.
Tena ca viññāṇena kiṁ vijānāti?

{1} Sukhan-ti pi vijānāti,
{2} Dukkhan-ti pi vijānāti,
{3} Adukkham-asukhan-ti pi vijānāti. These are three types of feeling (vedanā) that can be felt.

{1} Sukhavedanīyaṁ, bhikkhu, phassaṁ paṭicca uppajjati sukhā vedanā.

So sukhaṁ vedanaṁ vedayamāno: Sukhaṁ vedanaṁ vedayāmī ti pajānāti.

Tasseva sukhavedanīyassa phassassa nirodhā, yaṁ tajjaṁ vedayitaṁ sukhavedanīyaṁ, phassaṁ paṭicca uppannā sukhā vedanā, sā nirujjhati, sā vūpasammatī ti, pajānāti.

{2} Dukkhavedanīyaṁ, bhikkhu, phassaṁ paṭicca uppajjati dukkhā vedanā.

So dukkhaṁ vedanaṁ vedayamāno: Dukkhaṁ vedanaṁ vedayāmī ti pajānāti.

Tasseva dukkhavedanīyassa phassassa nirodhā, yaṁ tajjaṁ vedayitaṁ dukkhavedanīyaṁ phassaṁ paṭicca uppannā dukkhā vedanā, sā nirujjhati, sā vūpasammatī ti, pajānāti.

{3} Adukkham-asukhavedanīyaṁ, bhikkhu, phassaṁ paṭicca uppajjati adukkham-asukhā vedanā.

So adukkham-asukhaṁ vedanaṁ vedayamāno: Adukkham-asukhaṁ vedanaṁ vedayāmī ti pajānāti.

Tasseva adukkham-asukhavedanīyassa phassassa nirodhā, yaṁ tajjaṁ vedayitaṁ adukkham-asukhavedanīyaṁ phassaṁ paṭicca uppannā adukkham-asukhā vedanā, sā nirujjhati, sā vūpasammatī ti, pajānāti.
